Panthers 30, Strike Force 20
7/20/24 --
SAN DIEGO, CA - With both teams having clinched the playoffs, both teams rested players for next week's opening week slate of games and the backups for the Bay Area Panthers emerged tonight with a 30-20 win tonight at Pechanga Arena.
The win enhanced the defending champions' stronghold on the Western Conference and moves them to 13-3 on the season; their best record as a franchise. That's a far cry from their 1-15 record just two seasons ago in their inaugural year of 2022. Due to other outcomes in conference play, they will host the full strength Strike Force next week in the first round of the playoffs. The date and time has yet to be determined.
The teams have faced one another four times in total this season, with the Panthers leading. Aside from this one, the previous three have been decided by three points or less. They won the first matchup 53-50 on April 20 at San Jose. The Panthers captured the second game just a week later by a 33-32 tally at San Diego. Finally, the Strike Force won 43-42 at San Jose on June 16. Bay Area now leads the overall series, 5-3, including marks of 3-1 at home and 2-2 on the road.
The Panthers hit the scoreboard first courtesy of a 22-yard touchdown pass from Felix Harper to Jazeric Peterson more than halfway through the opening quarter. That would prove to be the lone score of the quarter, leaving Bay Area with a 6-0 lead heading into the second.
Newly signed quarterback Darius-James Peterson rushed in from three yards away to tie up the game. Benjamin Jones rushed for a 14-yard touchdown for Panthers Peterson evened up the score at 13 apiece toward the end of the first half. Craig Peterson's medium-length field goal sailed wide left as time expired. The teams went into halftime locked in 13-13.
The Strike Force's KiShawn Walker recovered an onside kick, but Rudy Johnson's run was fumbled and recovered by the Panthers' Joe Foucha. San Diego Capitalized with a 33-yard touchdown from Peterson to Isaiah Crocker early in the third. It would be the last score of the regular season for the Strike Force. Jones ran for a one-yard score with 6:25 left in the third. That knotted the game at 20-20 heading into the final quarter.
Craig Peterson's 48-yard field goal gave the Panthers their first leas since the first quarter. after forcing a turnover of downs by the Strike Force, they were able to score what would become the decisive touchdown when Harper scored from six yards out with 1:42 remaining.
Both teams rested their main players. The Panthers kept starting quarterback Daquan Neal, running back Shane Simpson and defensive back Antwon Kincade all sat for this one. Kincade had come into the week as the top tackler in the IFL, though he was taken over by Jordan Jones of the Tulsa Oilers this weekend. The most noticeable San Diego absence from the game was Strike Force quarterback Nate Davis, one of the best passers in the league.
Harper finished 11 or 15 for 94 with a touchdown and a pick, rushing for 39 yards and another score. Braxton Haley caught three balls for 36 yards and Jones, a former Tucson Sugar Skull, gained 52 yards off two carries and two scores. Tevaughn Grant's seven tackles let the defense, while Bill Atkins and Jonathan Ross each had 6.5. EJ Ane added a sack.
Rudy Johnson, Davis' backup this season, started, but was replaced by James-Peterson early in the game. James-Peterson went four of 13 with a touchdown and an interception. He rushed for a pair of scores. Johnson, who has spent much of the past few weeks as a rusher and receiver, carried 15 times for 97 yards. Crocker's four catches for 79 yards and receiving score led all pass catchers in the game. Sherrod Williams had five tackles to lead the defense. Ja'Quan Artis added a sack.
All playoff games with the exception of the National Championship Game will be streamed live on the IFL YouTube Channel. SCtoC will present previews of those, and all, games this season. Those previews will be posted on the board of the home team in each game. Click for our complete IFL 2024 Schedule.
