The following is the full schedule for the 2025 IFL Season.
The 17th season of the IFL will yield 14 teams in 2025, a reduction of three teams from the 16 that played in the previous season. The Duke City Gladiators, Frisco Fighters, and the Sioux Falls Storm have all announced they will go dormant in 2025 with intentions to return in 2026. However, the league did gain one expansion franchise in the Fishers Freight.
The Gladiators and Fighters did not provide reasoning for going dormant. Duke City is believed to have gone dormant due to funding issues that fans and insiders have observed, from the team's lack of updates to their official website, declining attendance, and declining play on the field. Frisco was reportedly being sold by the Germain Family, whose children voted 2-1 to sell the franchise to a prospective buyer in Allen, TX. Ultimately the deal did not go through, and the Fighters went dormant, hoping a new buyer will step up in 2026.
Meanwhile, the shocking news of the Sioux Falls Storm going dormant was due to the team's lease agreement with the Denny Sanford Premier Center not being renewed. Unable to come to agreements with an alternative venue, the Storm have chosen to suspend operations with the intent to return in 2026, hopefully with a new arena deal in place. Likely venues include a familiar venue in the Sioux Falls Arena, or the new Midco Arena on the campus of Augustana University.
On a positive news front, a new expansion franchise in Fishers, Indiana, a suburb of Indianapolis, will make its anticipated on-field debut in 2025. Founded in October 2023, the teams identity was revealed in December as the Fishers Freight. The team is owned by Jim Hallett, a Canadian retail automotive entrepreneur and the owner of the ECHL's Indy Fuel. The Freight will play its home games at the newly constructed Fishers Event Center, with a capacity of 6,500.
The 2025 season will once again be absent of the Dakota Bucks and the Columbus Wild Dogs. Bismarck, who went inactive for the 2023 season due to issues with the North Dakota Workforce Safety Insurance, stated it intended to play in 2025, changing its name from the Bismarck Bucks to the Dakota Bucks and working with both the Bismarck Event Center and Scheels Arena in Fargo to determine its home venue. The team hosted an IFL regular season game at Scheels Arena, dubbed the "Fargo-IFL Gridiron Classic." Unfortunately, the team did not come to an agreement with prospective investors and was left off the league's 2025 schedule. Although the door has not completely shut on the Bucks, hope is 2026 is when the team finally re-takes the field.
Meanwhile, all hope of the Columbus Wild Dogs taking the field appears to have vanished. The Wild Dogs, founded in 2019 and was slated to play in 2021 saw their inaugural season pushed back to 2022. Unfortunately, the Wild Dogs were not included in the 2022 schedule, seeing the franchise's inaugural season delayed once again. The Wild Dogs hoped that 2023 would be the year they finally make their IFL debut, but the team's social media disappeared and the team's website became outdated. Commissioner Todd Tryon stated in a 2024 interview that the snag with Columbus was the cost of operations on gameday throughout the season, so it was assumed the team would once again target the next season to debut. However, nothing has come to pass, and with the Germain Family putting the Frisco Fighters up for sale, the Wild Dogs have officially gone defunct.
The league will once again play a 16-game season to be spread out over 19 weeks, unchanged from the year prior. All fourteen teams will play a total of eight home games and eight away games.
The playoff format in 2025 will once again yield eight teams, with the top four teams in each conference qualifying for the 2025 IFL Playoffs. The IFL National Championship Game will take place at the Tucson Convention Center in Tucson, AZ, in the first year of a new three-year agreement to host the championship game. The National Championship was previously played at Lee's Family Forum in Henderson, NV in part of a three-year partnership that played out from 2022-2024.
