There are always bad calls and poor booth reviews in NFL games, and this is the place to gripe about them.
Today, my gripe is about the inconsistency of the receiving rule stating that a player must maintain the ball all the way through a fall to the ground. In what would have been the first TD of the season, Calvin Johnson (Megatron hereafter) had a TD reversed after it was deemed by a booth review that the ball was not controlled to the ground. At the time, the call did not seem unreasonable, but I was of the opinion that his dive toward the end zone was a "football move."
In the Sunday Night Football game, Victor Cruz caught a deep pass and made a singular catch and dive motion. He, in a similar move as Megatron, extended across the plane and lost the ball after making contact with the ground. In this circumstance, the booth did not even opt for a review, and it was ruled a touchdown.
Check out the video juxtaposition.
Personally, I would believe at least one of the following to be true about these two plays:
1. Neither were touchdowns. 2. Both were touchdowns. 3. Neither should have been reviewed by the booth. 4. Both should have been reviewed by the booth.
Unfortunately, none of these was true. What do think about this call?
Or, did I miss something worse?

i didn't see either play, however, the league says every scoring play is reviewed (not sure if this actually includes field goals). we hardly ever hear about this as it seems as a bit of a formality in some cases.
the rule change which bothers me -- and it was made a few years ago -- is where a defender can push a wide receiver out of bounds while he's making a catch in which he would have landed inbounds. this happened in the Green Bay-San Francisco game right near the goal line. the Packers receiver jumped straight up at least two feet from the sideline and made the catch. the 49ers defender pushed him out before he could land inbounds, which is clear he would have. this used to be counted as a catch, but now it's an incompletion. i realize we don't want to leave judgement calls up to the referees, but this was just plain obvious.
i guess that's not so much a bad call as it is a bad rule.
no joke here; as i typed that, the Chargers' Malcolm Floyd caught a ball and was forced out by the defender. i'm not 100 percent sure that he could have landed inbounds, but there was definitely a chance of that.
Stache, i feel your pain!

Funny, I was thinking the same thing when Floyd was pushed out! "Boy, I wish those catches still counted."
Yeah, I know that scoring plays are all reviewed. The way that I understand the rule is that the guys upstairs review it, and if its disputed, then they send it to the head official who "goes under the hood," so to speak. This happened with Megatron but not Cruz, which irked me.

i hate that rule change. it seems like defenders trying to push receivers out like that is more likely to cause injury than the way it used to be.
