For All-Star Break, the NBA's official site has a great feature on LaMarcus Aldridge where he talks about his heart condition, the fact he was not breathing when he was born and how criticisms about him. There were things in this piece, specifically the video, of which I had been unaware. As a fan of LaMarcus, I love him as a person and player even more.
As policy, we try not to include sponsors on this forum, but this is the all-star piece sponsored by Amnerican Express. They also have sections on the Wizards' John Wall, the Nets' Mason Plumlee and the Pelicans' Anthony Davis.
Here are a couple excerpts from the piece:
NBA: LaMarcus Aldridge is the heart of a Portland Trailblazers franchise competing for an NBA Championship, but the power-forward has had to fight to make his mark. Adversity has followed Aldridge throughout his life – there was a near-death experience at birth, an uneasy childhood, career threatening injuries and doubters at all levels – obstacles that define both his journey and character.
LaMarcus: "When you say I can’t do it, I’m going to show you I can do it."
NBA: A hip injury may have wiped out LaMarcus Aldridge’s first year of college ball, but he saw an opportunity. The Blazers power forward obsessively worked on the weakest part of his game – his shot – sitting on a stool and shooting one-handed, over and over. Aldridge’s deadly turn-around jumper followed, and today he’s amongst the most feared medium range shooters in the game.
LaMarcus: "I was born with a heart condition. My heart has never let me down so far."
He goes more into detail in the video, which I consider a must watch for Blazers -- and basketball -- fans. There also is an interactive video where you can track one of LaMarcus'signature moves.
