Arron Afflalo, Alonzo GeeFeb 19 - The Trail Blazers have announced that team has obtained shooting guard Arron Afflalo and small forward Alonzo Gee from the Denver Nuggets in exchange for forwards Thomas Robinson and Victor Claver, and guard Will Barton.
The deal also calls for the Blazers to send the Nuggets a 2016 lottery protected first round draft pick.
Afflalo, 6'5", is averaging 14.5 points and 3.4 rebounds in 53 games (53 starts) this season with the Nuggets. In his eighth season out of UCLA, he has also played for the Pistons and Magic. He was in his second stint with the Nuggets. He has career averages of 11.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists. His primary role will be to backup Wesley Matthews. Afflalo's contract for this season is just short of $7.4 million. He has a player option for next season which, if he exercised, would call for him to make $7.5 million. If he chooses not to exercise his player option, he would be an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season.
"I'm enjoying being a Nugget," Afflalo said Wednesday after practice (via the NBA's official website). "I'll always enjoy being a Nugget, despite the losses, despite whatever individual role I have. I'll be fine."Gee, 6'6", is averaging 4.9 points and 1.8 rebounds in 39 games (no starts) this season with the Nuggets. He is in his sixth season out of the University of Alabama, began his career with the Wizards, and has also played for the Kings and Cavaliers before joining the Nuggets prior to this season. Gee's career averages are 7.5 points and 3.4 rebounds. He has career season high average 10.6 points and 5.1 rebounds with the Cavaliers in 2011-12 (he averaged 10.3 the following year). He will likely serve as a backup for Nicolas Batum. He is making just over $1 million this year and is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
“Arron is a proven winner with playoff experience who will be easily integrated into our culture,” said Olshey in the Blazers official press release. “He possesses a skill set that compliments our style of play on both ends of the floor and will make an immediate impact as we continue our playoff push. Alonzo is an elite athlete and defender who adds a unique element to our perimeter.
“We thank Thomas, Will and Victor for their contributions to the team and wish them all the best for the future.” Thomas Robinson, Will Barton, Victor ClaverRobinson will be going to his fourth team in just under three seasons. He is averaging 3.4 points and 4.2 rebounds this season. His career averages are 4.6 points and 4.4 rebounds. He attended the University of Kansas, and has also played for the Kings and Rockets. He's been used somewhat sparingly this season; many times in slot appearances to provide an energetic boost. Last summer, the Blazers declined to exercise Robinson's fourth-year option and it seemed as though he was not in the Blazers' long-term plans.Barton is a spark of energy in the playing time he has earned. He was selected in the second round by the Blazers in the 2012 NBA draft (40th pick). He is averaging 3.0 points and 1.1 rebounds in 30 games this season. The third-year guard/forward from the University of Memphis holds averages of 3.8 points and 1.8 rebounds. He has been unable to fully crack the rotation over the past couple of seasons, with the team's focus on CJ McCollum and Allen Crabbe's emergence earlier this season. Last summer the Blazers did not exercise the team's fourth-year option on Barton.Claver has become a bit of an afterthought when it comes to the Blazers' rotation, as he has spent much of the past two seasons on the inactive list due to the team's relatively good injury history over that time, after having played in 49 games with 16 starts his rookie season. He has seen action in just 31 games since then. The third-year Spaniard is averaging 2.4 points and 2.0 rebounds this season. For his career he is averaging 3.2 points and 2.2 rebounds. Afflalo will wear number 4 and Gee will wear number 33 for the Blazers.
The deal leaves the Blazers with one open roster spot.

here's an interesting idea, given the passing of Jerome Kersey last night.

I was hoping we could get Wilson Chandler. This almost seems like a desperation trade.

it's official, the Oregonian is reporting that Steve Blake has obtained league approval to change his number to honor Kersey. "I just wanted to do that for him,'' Blake said. "Hopefully the fans will understand it." click to read the article.

I was hoping we could get Wilson Chandler. This almost seems like a desperation trade. i think the success of this trade hinges on whether Afflalo exercises his player option this summer. he has indicated that he planned not to do so, but that could change, i suppose. it also could hinge on how far we go this year. often, it's impossible to judge a trade until a year or two down the road.

I am not completely thrilled with the trade the Blazers made today. There seem to be a lot of question marks. I will miss T-Rob, Will and Victor. I am hopeful that Afflalo and Gee can help get us to the next step.

I'm really happy with the trade and thought the Blazers got a lot better. Will be interesting to see who they chase with the open roster spot.

He wanted to change it so that no one would be wearing Kersey's number. kind of honoring him by not wearing it.

I thought you guys might like to see this on instagram from Arron Afflalo, taken while he was on the plane on his way to Portland. I like his thinking! His Post states: "LA DL WM NB RL .... This team was a beast before i even got here .... So its just how I feel" In this video, he says: "Nine years for me, over 20 for the city of Portland. you know what I'm about. It's championship time."Click this link.

I just thought I would add to this story a little.
- Thomas Robinson and the Nuggets have reached an agreement on a contract buyout. This will allow Robinson to try to sign with a playoff contender, which he has expressed a desire to do. Due to league rules, the Blazers could not re-sign him for a full calendar year.
- It is being reported now that Victor Claver will be waived by the Nuggets. This means that during a 48-hour period any team with room on the salary cap space can claim him at his current salary, which is just $1.37 million this season. Due to league rules, the Blazers are unable to sign him for the remainder of the season.
