Feb. 26 - In a much anticipated move, the Arena Football League has announced its 2015 league alignment. However, the end product is essentially what many AFL fans had figured it would be.
As the league sees teams come and go, it's nearly an annual event. The AFL lost two teams this year -- the Iowa Barnstormers which moved to the Indoor Football League, and the San Antonio Talons and Pittsburgh Power, which folded. Conversely, it will see a new team (the league seems to officially stay away from the term "expansion"). The Las Vegas Outlaws will begin play this season.
The Thunder will remain in the National Conference Pacific Division, along with the San Jose Sabercats and Spokane Shock. It is the only division unaffected by the realignment.
The Outlaws will basically replace the Talons in the National Conference West Division. The New Orleans VooDoo will remain in the American Conference, but move from the South Division to the East Division, basically replacing the Power.
The names of the conferences and divisions remain the same.
Here is the conference and division breakdown:
AMERICAN CONFERENCE
South Division
Jacksonville Sharks
Orlando Predators
Tampa Bay Storm
East Division
Cleveland Gladiators
New Orleans VooDoo
Philadelphia Soul
NATIONAL CONFERENCE
Pacific Division
Portland Thunder
San Jose Sabercats
Spokane Shock
West Division
Arizona Rattlers
Las Vegas Outlaws
Los Angeles KISS
The 2015 AFL season kicks off the weekend of March 27-30. The Thunder open up on the 27th, hosting the KISS, at 7 p.m. (PT) at Moda Center at the Rose Quarter.
