May 21 -- Darron Thomas has been voted Arena Football League MVP for week 8.
The Thunder signal caller earned over 70 percent of the fan vote on the AFL's official website. The weekly poll is open for 24 hours over the Wednesday and Thursday following each weekend's games. It is located on the front page of the site.
Thomas beat out the other candidates, QB Bernard Morris of the Orlando Predators and QB Nathan Stanley of the San Jose Sabercats.
It was announced on May 19 that Thomas also has been named the Russell Athletic Offensive Player of the Week for week 8.
Thomas, making his first start of the season, led the Thunder to a 63-47 win over the Los Angeles KISS on May 16 at Moda Center at the Rose Quarter. He completed 20 of 31 passes for 229 yards and 6 touchdowns. He also ran for a first quarter touchdown.
The 63 points scored by the Thunder was a season high and the second most in franchise history, and helped snap a three-game losing streak..
Thomas sent the crowd of 10,023 into cheers during opening introductions as he ran on to the field carrying a green University of Oregon jersey. The 6'2" second year Thunder quarterback led the Ducks to the national championship following the 2010 season.
Thomas started three games for the Thunder last season, but the team failed to enter the win column in any of them. This is his first such Arena Football League honor.
The AFL announced its other weekly honors on May 19 as well:
Riddell Defensive Player of the Week - Ken Fontenette (DB), San Jose Sabercats.
J. Lewis Small Playmaker of the Week - Amarri Jackson (WR), Cleveland Gladiators.
Cutters Catch of the Week - Rod Windsor (WR), Arizona Rattlers.
AFL Highlight of the Week - Terence Moore (JLB), Orlando Predators.
The Thunder are on the road this week as they travel to Orlando to take on the Predators on May 23. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. (PT) and the game will be televised nationally on the CBS Sports Network.
