July 7 -- The Portland Thunder have signed defensive back Varmah Sonie, according to team sources.
Sonie played for the Thunder during their inaugural season last year. He signed with the NFL's Cleveland Browns in February, but was released last week.
The 5'8", 175-pound Burnsville, Minnesota started 17 games for the Thunder last season. He intercepted 9 passes which he returned for 167 yards for the Thunder last season. He recorded 80 tackles with 12 assists and forced 3 fumbles. He also returned 5 kickoffs for 46 yards (8.6 average). He earned first-team All-AFL honors.
Sonie reflected the following during his exit interview with the Thunder in August:
"Coming in as rookies and being young, I think we played (well). We got better each game we played so that was the main part. We finished strong with the last game and the playoffs. I'm looking forward to next year."
Sonie earned Second Team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference accolades during his senior season at the University of Northern Iowa. He totaled 158 tackles, 7.5 stops for loss, 16 pass breakups, six interceptions, three forced fumbles and two blocked kicks in three years as a starter.
