July 16 -- Blazers forward/guard Allen Crabbe suffered a scare in the Las Vegas Summer League on July 15, but it could be much worse.
Going up for a rebound in the second quarter, Crabbe landed backward on his left ankle. He lay on the ground wincing in pain for several moments as his teammates surrounded him. The third-year player from California (Berkeley) was eventually led to a stretcher and wheeled off the court.
X-rays at the Thomas & Mack Center indicated that Crabbe had not suffered a break. Instead, as an MRI today revealed, Crabbe suffered a severe sprain of his left ankle. He is projected to be out 4-6 weeks, which would make his return at least a month prior to the start of training camp.
Crabbe was using the Summer League to cement a roster spot. He was averaging 15.5 points and 1.5 steals in four games and shot 44 percent from three-point range. If the Blazers do not waive him y August 1, his contract for 2015-16 will become guaranteed.
He has averaged 2.0 points in 66 career games with the Blazers over his two-year career. After playing in just 15 games his rookie season, Crabbe appeared in 51 last season (8 starts), averaging 3.3 points and 1.4 rebounds per game.
The Blazers acquired Crabbe in a 2013 draft day trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers which brought the former Pac-12 Player of the Year to Portland in exchange for two second-round picks. The Cavaliers had drafted Crabbe with the first pick of the second round (number 31).
The Blazers continue their Summer League play tonight against the Boston Celtics at 7:30 (PT).
