The Portland Thunder announced on Wednesday that it has exercised rookie options on 8 players.
What exactly does that mean? Well, according to the AFL's Collective Bargaining Agreement, the standard player contract for a player that is of rookie status "shall have an option for the League to extend the contract for an additional one (1) year term if the Team to which the Player is assigned desires to retain the Player for the option year."
In other words, AFL rookies are signed to 2-year contracts with an option to retain or release a rookie after his first year. In Portland's case, they decided to retain 8 rookies from the 2015 squad.
The eight players that Portland will retain the rights to going into 2016 include:
4 - Osagie Odiase (DB)
2015 Stats - 63.5 total tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 2 fumble recoveries, 17 pass breakups, 1 interception (14 games)
11 - Dexter Davis (JLB)
2015 Stats - 20.0 total tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 5.0 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 1 pass breakup (9 games)
13 - Matt Pierce (DB)
2015 Stats - 19.0 total tackles, 4 pass breakups, 1 forced fumble (8 games)
15 - Perez Ashford (WR)
2015 Stats - 49 receptions, 458 yards, 6 touchdowns; 17.5 total tackles; 10 kick returns, 68 yards (17 games)

24 - Andre Martin Jr. (DB)
2015 Stats - 26.5 total tackles, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery, 6 pass breakups (6 games)
45 - Adrian Hamilton (DE)
2015 Stats - 12.0 total tackles, 1.0 sacks, 2 tackles for loss, 4 pass breakups (5 games)

*Portland Thunder's Comeback Player of the Year (missed 2 months with leg injury before returning in Week 10)
