I heard about this during a Podcast Recap of ESPN's Mike & Mike In the Morning. So, of course, I had to look this up. A Filipino restaurant in Williamsburg, Brooklyn is selling a gold-coated champagne doughnut for $100. The restaurant, Manila Social Club, is known for its special Ube Bae Donuts, which are purple. If you don't know what Ube jam is, it comes from mashing purple yams and is commonly used in Filipino desserts. The cost of a dozen Ube Bae Donuts is $40. However, this restaurant has decided to take the next step and sell a golden ube doughnut. The icing is made with Cristal Champagne and filled with ube mousse and champagne jelly. Outside of the doughnut is 24-karat gold, which is flecked along the top. In case you wanted a dozen of these Gold Doughnuts, New Yorkers are reportedly putting down $1,200 for them (Gold is currently priced at $1,075/ounce). And if a Gold Doughnut isn't up to your liking, you can buy the "black and gold" doughnut, made with an IPA beer from Bushwick, Brooklyn and dusted with 24-karat gold. I highly doubt VooDoo Doughnut is going to be selling doughnuts like this any time soon. So, if you had a spare $100, would you be bold enough to eat these doughnuts? But it's gold. Why would you eat it! You stick your finger in it, wear it around and show off to your friends!
