Beakdown
BLIZZARD
Green Bay is looking for payback after dropping its home opener to the Bucks, 41-35, in week 1. The Blizzard went up 35-33 on a field goal with 1:18 left, but a late Bucks' score a minute and twelve seconds later ruined the season and home opener for the Blizzard. Since then, the Blizzard have reeled of a pair of wins over the Massachusetts Pirates (40-36) and the Louisville Xtreme (49-29). All three of the Blizzard's games thus far, making this their road opener. The Blizzard will look to keep the winning streak alive as they attempt to capitalize on their 2019 season in which they ended with a 9-5 record with a trip to the playoffs. After Aaron Aiken started the first two games, the Blizzard has seemingly settled on Damion May at quarterback. He had a very effective outing of nine of 14 passing for 80 yards and four touchdowns, along with a rushing score, on the ground. Kezlow Smith, Keshaun Taylor and Eric Thomas make up the receiving corps, while Kerrion Moore has become the featured back. Corey Turner, Malik Reeves and Bakari Triggs lead a tough defense which could make things difficult for the Bucks offense, which scored just 18 points last week against the Pirates.
BUCKS
Bismarck was flying high after their come-from-behind win in week 1 over the Blizzard. It was Glen Cuiellette's 14-yard touchdown strike to Raheem Harvey with 6.8 seconds left sealed their first win of the season, as well as their first road win since April 20, 2019 when they dispatched the Cedar Rapids River Kings, 40-25. Things got tougher for the Bucks offense last week when the Massachusetts Pirates sailed into down. The Bucks struggled offensively all game long, while their defense did their best to hold off the renegade sailors, they we unable to get something going. Cuiellette started the game and Richard Stammetti came into the contest late, but was unable to purpose a comeback. Cuiellette has the better of the success, but good money is on him to start here against the Blizzard's defense which he exposed in the second half of the opener. Harvey is the go-to receiver, though look for Mike Carrigan and JT Stokes to get some targets. Justin Rankin rushed for 50 yards on 10 carries in the first matchup, and is an option out the backfield. Deion Carter, Derrion Jackson and Malik Duncan anchor a defense which did just enough to keep the Bucks close with the opportunity to win.
IFL Hall of Fame
During halftime of the May 15 game between the Iowa Barnstormers and Sioux Falls Storm, four new members will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. They are: Former IFL and NFL (Buffalo Bills) running back Fred Jackson; Former player and current Sioux Falls Storm head coach Kurtiss Riggs; two-time United Bowl Championship head coach and once Coach of the Year Heron O'Neal; and the late John Pettit, for his contributions to the indoor game and eventually bringing the Iowa Barnstormers over to the IFL, and winning the 2018 United Bowl.
Clockwise from top left: Fred Jackson, Kurtiss Riggs, John Pettit, Heron O'Neal.
FRED JACKSON
Played for the Sioux City Bandits and for the Buffalo Bills of the NFL, leading them in rushing for four seasons. He amassed over 5,000 rushing yards with the Bills. Jackson: "My journey to the NFL was truly a unique one. Some of my fondest memories of playing football were in the IFL. I was able to learn a lot about the speed of the game. It is an absolute honor to be inducted into the IFL Hall of Fame."
KURTISS RIGGS
The current head coach of the Storm has had a lasting legacy on indoor football, including guiding the Storm to 10 straight United Bowl appearances, winning seven of those. Riggs: "This is an accomplishment I never envisioned. But, is an award that really makes me think back to all the great players and coaches that I have had the opportunity to work with and coach. I am very thankful for the tremendous owners that have been willing to take on the indoor game and own a team in the IFL and Sioux Falls. Thank you to my family for their support and being a part of things year in and year out. Thank you to the fans, players, coaches, sponsors, staff, and families that have contributed to the Storm tradition of success."
HERON O'NEAL
The awarded coach led the Billings Outlaws to the first two United Bowl victories ever, in 2009 and 2010. He coached several other teams and is now at the helm of the Salina Liberty of Champions Indoor Football. Heron: "I firmly believe that during any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear is that moment when he has worked his heart out for a good cause and stands exhausted on the field of battle,” O’Neal said. “In the years of coaching in the IFL, I battled against some great coaches and coached some great men and without them I wouldn't be who I am today and I wouldn't be here accepting this nomination. I thank them and all who believed in me."
JOHN PETTIT
In 2008, he brought the Barnstormers back to Des Moines and, eventually from the Arena Football League to the IFL after the 2014 season. As co-owner and general manager, he Helped lead the Barnstormers to the 2018 United Bowl championship. Mr. Pettit passed away in December 2020. His daughter, Juli Pettit, was named the team's general manager on March 3, 2021. Juli Pettit on replacing her father: "There is a giant hole that is impossible to fill within the Barnstormers organization. I feel honored to be trusted to take on this title and I have every intention of continuing to run the team with the same integrity as my dad. My dad taught me everything I know and I am one of very few who can honestly say I learned from the best."
The above information is compiled from the IFL's official website, as well as the official website of the Iowa Barnstormers.
