Fargo-IFL Gridiron Classic
In a game that we at SctoC have had circled on our calendar since the schedule was released, the Fargo-IFL Gridiron Classic is born. The game is presented by the Dakota Bucks (formerly of Bismarck) who have been dormant in 2023 and 2024 while working on issues related to North Dakota Workforce Safety Insurance. The Bucks are anticipating a return to action in 2025 with a possible relocation to Fargo, in the eastern portion of North Dakota. This year’s matchup between the Pirates and Storm count as a home game for the Storm and an away contest for the Pirates. It has not been announced whether this event will be repeated in future seasons.

BREAKDOWN
Massachusetts came back down to earth last week in an 11-point loss at Quad City. Here, the Pirates make a visit to not South Dakota, but North Dakota to face the struggling Storm. After winning their first four, they will be looking to get back on the winning track and keep pace with the Frisco Fighters in the Eastern Conference standings. The Pirates are still in good position to make some noise, but they’ll have to take care of business this week at the Fargo-IFL Gridiron Classic. Should they win, they will complete the season sweep of the Storm. Alejandro Bennifield is at the top of his game in the offense. His 15 touchdown passes are tied for second in the IFL. He comes in completing 64 percent of his passes for an average of 128.8 yards per game with just three interceptions. He definitely seems back to his 2021 Championship Game MVP form. Jimmie Robinson is seventh in the league with 58.3 rushing yards per game to go along with two touchdowns. He also has a pair of receiving scores. The Pirates have pone of the stronger trios of receivers in the league. It starts with veteran Isaac Zico with his 17 catches for 232 yards and five touchdowns. Thomas Owens surpassed 70 career receiving touchdowns (four this season) and his 75th in last week’s game at the Steamwheelers. Teo Redding rounds out the group with 171 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Calvin Bundage’s 24 tackles and 2.5 sacks lead the Pirates stout defense. Matt Elam and Darius Williams add 19 and 18 tackles, respectively, and each has an interception. Josh Gable boasts an average of 49 yards per kickoff with a deuce. The Pirates average 43.2 points per game (eighth) and allow 37.0 (fourth).

BREAKDOWN
Sioux Falls is desperately looking for its first win of the season. The Storm are hoping that this Fargo-IFL Gridiron Classic will provide the opportunity to do just that. Some growing pains were expected after Andre Fields took over for Kurtiss Riggs and quarterback Lorenzo Brown, Jr. Retired after last season. The Storm were competitive in their trip to Massachusetts back in week 3. They lost by just eight points and may match up well against the Pirates. The teams have had a history of competing in close games and this one could easily end up in that category. Billy Hall has started all four games thus far for the Storm and has compiled 62 percent of his throws with nine touchdowns and two interceptions, and has rushed for nearly 58 yards per game with three touchdowns. However, we could see Brown take over. He came out of retirement to fill in for the Arizona Rattlers for three games and now has re-signed with the Storm. The two-time United Bowl MVP could provide some stability at the quarterback position. Xavier Jackson is the lead back, but rushes for just under seven carries per game. He has two touchdowns on the ground and three as a receiver. Kentrez Bell is the team’s leading receiver at just over 50 yards per game and three touchdowns. Carlos Thompson, Jr. Adds 106 receiving yards and a score. Elijah Reed leads the team with 25.5 tackles, while Amin Black has 24 and a sack. LaRonji Vason-McCoy adds 18.5 tackles for the defense. Dean Sarris averages 50.8 yards per kickoff with three deuces. The Storm score 37.0 points per game (13th) and allow 47.8 (14th).
