BREAKDOWN
Despite last week’s loss to the Gunslingers, Frisco has set itself up as the team to beat in the Eastern Conference (though the Massachusetts Pirates and Green Bay Blizzard might have something to say about that). The Fighters are in the IFL top five in points scored and points allowed. That makes for a potent combination on both sides of the ball. Their two-point loss to the Gunslingers last week comes just six days after a 28-point win at the Tulsa Oilers in week 6. They’ll be looking for revenge in this one against their new neighbors from south Texas. TJ Edwards is always a MVP candidate with his 69 percent completion rate with 10 touchdowns and two interceptions. His 105.4 yards per game is only an indication of the team’s aggressive ground attack. Edwards’ 58.8 yards per game is fifth in the league and he leads the IFL with 18 rushing touchdowns. Jimmy Smith can pick up some slack in the running game with 3.6 yards per carry and two touchdowns. Devon McCoy has emerged as the lead receiver for the team with 48.4 receiving yards per game to go with four touchdowns. Cole Blackman is a solid target with nearly 31 yards per game and five scoring grabs. Defensively, it’s a team effort led by the 21.5 tackles of Ethan Caselberry and 19 of Royce See. Lionel McConnell is tied for the IFL lead with four interceptions and Charles Williams has recorded a pair of sacks. Recently signed kicker Brad Namdar averaged 42 yards per kickoff last week. The Fighters average 49.2 points per game (third) and allow 38.6 (fifth).
Roster information is compiled by SCtoC staff, based on all available and verifiable information. The IFL does not list its official transactions for the 2024 season. BREAKDOWN
San Antonio’s win over the Fighters last week made the IFL take notice. The Gunslingers were strong on offense, as usual, and were able to muster some defense when it needed to in the second half. Svante Davenport’s interception of Edwards in the waning seconds sealed the deal for their first IFL road win. It will take as much, if not more to re-create last week’s success, but this time the game will be at the friendly confines of Freeman Coliseum in what should be a raucous crowd. This will be only their second Saturday game of the season. As strong of a rusher Edwards is, Sam Castronova is at least as strong of a passer. He leads the IFL in passing yards per game at nearly 198 and is the far and away leader with 28 passing touchdowns (second is San Diego’s Nate Davis with 19). He also rushes for 28.8 yards per game with seven touchdowns. He has plenty of weapons. DJ Myers is fourth in the IFL at 59.8 receiving yards per game to go with five touchdowns, and Nyquan Murry is not far behind with 52.8 yards and a total of eight touchdowns. Austin Upshaw and Kali Rashaad have seven and three touchdown catches, respectively. Tristan Vance leads the defense with 21 tackles. Gio Vonne Sanders adds 14.5 tackles and Ricky Wyatt has 13.5. TC Stevens averages 50.4 yards per kickoff. The Gunslingers score 53.8 points per game (first) and allow 56.5 (16th).
