Spokane Empire DB Robert Brown has been named Vidswap.com's Defensive Player of the Week for Week 2.
Brown (5'10'', 175 lbs) was the difference maker in Spokane's 34-31 victory over the Green Bay Blizzard. In a predominantly defensive battle between former af2 foes, Spokane held on to a slim 19-17 lead heading into the 4th Quarter. Less than a minute in, Brown stepped up with a tremendous interception off of Green Bay QB Matt Behrendt, dashing along the sideline walls and returning the interception 39 yards for a touchdown, giving Spokane a 25-17 lead.
In addition to his momentum swinging interception, Brown added 2 tackles and a pass breakup for the defending Intense Conference Champions. With a defensive backfield largely intact from last season, Brown and the Empire defense cooled Green Bay's passing attack in a stellar defensive performance, limiting the Blizzard to 169 total passing yards. Spokane's defenders made things difficult for QB Matt Behrendt, who completed only 42% of his passes during the game. It was a stark contrast to his 4 touchdown, 192 yard performance against the Cedar Rapids Titans the week before.
Honorable mentions for Defensive Player of the Week for Week 2 include DB Derrick Morgan (Colorado), DB Manny Asprilla (Green Bay), DB Matt Goldsmith (Iowa), and DB Trey Wafford (Nebraska).
The other IFL Week 2 winners include:
Offensive Player of the Week - QB Verlon Reed, Salt Lake Screaming Eagles
Special Teams Player of the Week - WR/KR Tyler Williams, Wichita Falls Nighthawks
Celebration of the Week - WR Jordan Jolly, Wichita Falls Nighthawks
This is the second DPotW honor for Brown during his time as a member of the Empire. He previously was named DPotW in Week 16 of the 2016 season.
This week, the Empire make their first trip to Wichita Falls to take on the Nighthawks at Kay Yaeger Coliseum in Wichita Falls, TX. Kickoff is scheduled at 5:05 p.m. PST. You can catch the action locally on the radio on 700 ESPN AM, 105.3 FM, or online at 700ESPN.com. The game will be broadcast on the IFL's Official YouTube account.
