ANALYSIS
These teams met in week 2, as the Titans scored the only points of the fourth quarter to propel them to a 47-39 win. It's the second straight win in the series for Cedar Rapids, having defeated the Titans, 41-37, on April 1, 2017. That was the only win for the Titans last season. The Titans have an edge of 11-7 in the series. The Blizzard won the first-ever meeting between the teams; 64-12, on March 9, 2012. That was the largest margin of victory in the series. The Blizzard still have some slim playoff hopes, while the Titans have been eliminated from playoff contention. The teams will only play two games this season. They were slated to play three, but the June 14 contest in Green Bay was canceled due to blizzard-like conditions (pun intended).
Cedar Rapids is coming off their second win of the season, a 33-26 survival of the Nebraska Danger on June 2. They held a 33-12 lead in the fourth quarter of that game before the Danger scored a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns. Even if they were to win their final two games of the regular season, they could potentially end in a tie for fourth place with the Nebraska Danger. Presuming the first tiebreaker is head-to-head record, the Titans would come out on the short end having lost the season series to the Danger, 2-1. Despite that, finishing the season strong after a rough 2018 campaign would affirm the team's fight all season under Marvin Jones, who is in his first full season as an IFL head coach. Jones, who served as interim head coach of the Colorado Crush during the latter portion of last season, is 3-15 as an IFL head coach.
In the Titans' pass-heavy offense, Jake Medlock has been sensational this season. The rookie from Florida International University far and away leads the IFL in passing yards per game at 181.4 and in passing touchdowns with 41. He is completing 61.6 percent of his passes. Medlock also leads in the league in passing attempts and completions. He also has rushed for 12 touchdowns. Raphael Lawson-Gayle is an exciting compliment to the passing game. He rushes for 28.9 yards per game with a 4.0 yards per carry average. Leading receiver Connor Hollenbeck has been on Short Term Injured Reserve, but is eligible to return (depending on the severity of injury). Marquel Wade averages 67.5 receiving yards per game, with 13.2 yards per catch and a team-high 12 touchdowns. Javon Bell has 40 catches for 425 yards and 11 touchdowns. James Calhoun, who had 9 interceptions last season with the Crush, has 4 this season, along with 6 tackles for loss. Moses White has recovered 4 fumbles this season and has 61.5 total tackles. Michael Georgetti is back as the Titans' kicker after being away from the team for two weeks. He is 5 of 20 on field goal attempts, with 12 misses coming from 30 yards or further.
Green Bay needs to win their final two games of the season and hope that the Danger lose at home to the Rattlers in the season finale on June 16. If all that happens, the Blizzard would overtake the Danger for the fourth and final spot in the playoffs. The top of the standings are muddy, but that would likely mean a trip to either Iowa to face the Barnstormers or to Arizona to face the Rattlers. The Blizzard started off the season with seven straight losses before earning their first win of the season on May 5, a 47-25 result over the Danger. Two weeks later, Green Bay defeated the Danger, 31-20, at Grand Island, Nebraska. The Blizzard's two wins have come over their last five games, but they have been outscored, 163 to 51 in those three losses. Corey Roberson is 2-5 as the interim head coach of the Blizzard.
Since taking over as quarterback of the Blizzard, Bryan Hicks has been a definite upgrade over original starter Christian Lemay. While Lemay led a predominately running attack, Hicks has shown more promise through the air. Hicks comes in completing 56.7 percent of his passes and averages 133.7 passing yards per game. He's thrown 15 touchdowns against 6 interceptions on the season. Already an IFL Hall of Famer, B.J. Hill leads the team with 269 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns. He also leads the IFL with 4 kickoffs returned for touchdowns. Hill caught 5 passes for 80 yards and a score last week against the Storm. Jereme Jones is the team leader in receptions with 31 and yards with 357. Chris Malott has caught a team-leading 7 touchdowns. Jones and Malott are averaging 11.5 and 11.0 yards per reception, respectively. Indoor football veteran Manny Asprilla adds 7 pass break ups to his 62.5 total tackles. Linebacker Robert Metz has tallied 4.5 sacks and 8 tackles for loss, while Brian Boudreaux has 2.5 total tackles and a team leading 9 tackles for loss on the season. The Blizzard will be on their fourth kicker of the season, as they have signed Cody Barber this week. Appearing in 10 games with the Barnstormers this season, Barber made 10 of 18 of his field goal tries with a long of 33 yards. Six of those misses came from 37 yards or further.
