BREAKDOWN
The Danger and the Blizzard have meet 14 times previously, but never in the playoffs. Green Bay leads the overall series, 8-6, including a 2-1 edge in each of the past two seasons. The three meetings this season have all been decided by 10 points or less, with an average margin of victory being just six points. All three contests came down to the last minute. The Danger are making their seventh straight playoff appearance, advancing to the United Bowl three straight seasons from 2013 to 2015. They were defeated for the championship by the Sioux Falls Storm each year. They've reached the conference championship in each of the past three seasons. The Blizzard are ending a six-year playoff drought with an impressive turnaround from last year's 2-12 finish. They last reached the playoffs in 2012 where they defeated the Bloomington Edge in the quarterfinals before losing to the Storm in the Conference Championship. They reached the playoffs in 2011 as well, also making it to the conference championship and falling to the Storm. In 2010 the earned a playoff berth, but were eliminated in the quarterfinals by the Chicago Slaughter. Both coaches were hired by these respective teams on an interim basis during the 2018 season and named full head coaches of the teams shortly after the end of last season.
The teams have had some thrilling contests this season. In a back-and-forth battle in week 2, the Danger took a 52-47 lead with 1:17 left on a 29-yard pass from Tommy Armstrong, Jr. to Gregory Dent, Jr. Green Bay quarterback Lenorris Footman scored the game-wining touchdown on a six yard run with 25 seconds remaining. Footman attempted a two-point conversion run, but was short and the Blizzard held on for a 53-52 win. In week 13, the Danger rallied from 18 down late in the fourth quarter to pull to within three points with 15 seconds remaining. After recovering the onside kick, the Blizzard were able to ice the 10-point win on a six-yard touchdown rush from Rameses Owens. The third meeting, the following week, saw the Blizzard take a one-point lead on an Owens' run of two yards with 1:18 left, but Nebraska scored on a 30-yard pass from Armstrong to Dent, and a two-point conversion rush by Armstrong to put the Danger up 47-40 with 47 seconds left. Brandon Roe's interception of Footman as time expired sealed the seven-point win for Nebraska.
The Danger have quite a bit of talent on offense, though it has been a bit inconsistent at times during the season. Tommy Armstrong, Jr. who holds several major passing records for the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers has been solid all season. Armstrong passed for 128.5 yards per game and his 37 touchdown tosses rank fourth in the IFL. He completed 59.8 percent of his passes and threw nine picks. He is a threat rushing the ball with 51.4 yards per game and led the league in touchdowns on the ground with 26.Davonte Sapp-Lynch, Marshawn's kid brother enjoyed a strong rookie season, gaining 541 yards off 111 carries and was third in the league with 22 trips to the end zone. Sapp-Lynch was also a threat out of the backfield with 26 catches for 222 yards and a score. Eric Thomas led all Danger receivers with 40 receptions for 449 yards. Dent caught 36 throws for 408 yards. Thomas and Dent each had 11 touchdown grabs. Quincy Walden, with 15 receptions for 211 yards and five touchdowns, is also utilized sometimes as a rusher. Mike Tatum, the IFL all-time leader in all-purpose yards, was signed late in the season and should see some targets.
Roe led a balanced defensive attack with six interceptions to go along with 45 tackles. Chris Martin was a terror to opposing quarterbacks, tallying a league-high 8.5 sacks and 16.5 tackles for loss. He also had 44 tackles and three pass break ups. Lavarious Varnado also also had 44 tackles to go along with a pair of interceptions and four pass break ups. D'Vonn Brown came on late in the season for the Nebraska defense with 4.5 sacks, 12 tackles for loss and three fumble recoveries and three pass break ups. Seyvon Lowry comes in with 4.5 sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss. Thomas, Walden, Dent and Tatum are all excellent options as kick returners with Thomas' 21.9 average and three overall return touchdowns leading the group. Dent also returned a kickoff back for a touchdown. Mid-season signee Diego Marquez made 32 of 36 extra point attempts with the team. He also hit on seven of 16 field goal attempts with a long of 51 yards for the Danger.
The Blizzard's offense seemed to improve and become more and more steady as the year went along. Like Armstrong, Footman is a dual threat quarterback. Footman threw for 140.5 yards per game a and was fifth in the league with 34 touchdown throws. He completed 55.4 percent of his passes with just seven interceptions and his 1,967 passing yards was fourth in the IFL this season. He also rushed for 50.6 yards per game and 17 scores. With Owens on injured reserve, the team brought in Anthony Philyaw to fill the void at running back. In four appearances with the team, he finished with 178 yards off 40 carries and seven touchdowns. Wide receiver B.J. Hill, already an IFL Hall of Famer, is also sometimes used as a runner out of the backfield. The Blizzard feature four strong options at the receiver position. Keshaun Taylor led the group with 52 receptions for 630 yards and a dozen touchdowns. Kezlow Smith caught 38 passes for 501 yards and 11 scores, while Hill hauled in 36 throws for 420 yards and seven scores. Levi Copelin is a possession-type receiver who finished the regular season with 26 receptions for 297 yards and four touchdowns.
Dayshawn Taylor's 75 tackles led a stingy Blizzard defense. He also had a sack, 7.5 tackles for loss and a pair of pass break ups. Silverberry Mouhon led the team with 12 tackles for loss to go along with 53 tackles, five sacks and two fumble recoveries. Joe Powell contributed 64 tackles and a pair of interceptions. Bakari Triggs tied for the league lead in interceptions with six, and added a team-high 10 pass break ups. Deldrick Canty recorded five sacks and eight tackles for loss, while Teko Powell had 4.5 sacks and nine tacklds for loss. Heath Harding added three interceptions and Marquez Gollman had two picks. Hill, who is second all-time in the IFL in all-purpose yards, will likely be key in the kick return game. He averaged 16.8 per kickoff return, and returned a missed field goal for a touchdown this season. On June 18 the Blizzard re-signed kicker Edward Ruhnke. In five appearances with Green Bay this season, he made 25 of 29 extra point attempts and five of 11 field goal tries with a long of 37 yards.
