BREAKDOWN
This conference championship contest between last season's United Bowl participants should turn out to be as good as advertised. The teams split their season series this year. This will be the 14th overall meeting between the teams since the Barnstormers made the move from the Arena Football League to the Indoor Football League prior to the 2015 season. The Storm lead the overall series 10-3, but the Barnstormers have won two of the last three and three of the last five, including last season's United Bowl. The teams have met at least twice in each of the past five seasons. Last season's United Bowl was a back-and-forth battle, with Barnstormers' running back Jamal Tyler scoring on an eight-yard run with 13 seconds remaining to put the game away. The 42-38 win over the Storm gave the Barnstormers their first-ever championship in either the AFL or IFL. Iowa wide receiver Ryan Balentine caught five passes for 91 yards and three touchdowns in the game. Sioux Falls quarterback Lorenzo Brown threw for 134 yards and a touchdown, and rushed 16 times for 84 yards and four touchdowns in the contest. The winner of this game will play the winner of the Intense Conference Championship which features the Nebraska Danger visiting the Arizona Rattlers.
The two meetings this season provided a preview of what we might see in this game. Brown's 10-yard touchdown toss to Kent Shelby with one second remaining lifted the Storm to a 36-32 win over the Barnstormers at Sioux Falls back on April 20. Brown threw for 81 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for 61 yards and another score in that victory. Barnstormers' quarterback Daquan Neal threw for two touchdowns and rushed for another in the loss. The teams' second match up came in week 16 at Des Moines on July 8. The Barnstormers clinched a first round bye with a 55-43 win over the Storm. Neal threw for 238 yards and six touchdowns while rushing for 77 yards and two more scores in the win, and Brown threw for 151 yards and a touchdowns while rushing for 110 yards and four scores in the Storm's loss. Sioux Falls was the second-highest scoring team during the regular season at 52.7 points per game. The Storm ranked fifth in total offense at 249.4 yards per game. They allowed 42.1 points and 228.2 yards allowed per game both ranked fourth in the league. Iowa was fourth in the league in scoring at 51.6 points per game and second with 270.1 yards of total offense per game. The Barnstormers' defense allowed just 37.3 points and 224.9 yards per game.
There is plenty of IFL playoff experience to go around on the Storm roster. Lorenzo Brown, Jr. led the Storm to United Bowl titles in 2015 and 2016. He finished the regular season third in passing yards per game at 156.9 and touchdowns through the air with 46. He completed 62.8 percent of his passes with 10 interceptions. Brown rushed 138 times for 544 yards and is tied with Tucson's Jones for fourth with 21 rushing touchdowns. The team signed veteran quarterback Chris Dixon for the playoffs. Dixon is a five time United Bowl Champion with the Storm and, prior, Billings Outlaws. He has won the league MVP three times and the United Bowl MVP three times. Dixon, who served as head coach of the Billings Wolves from 2015 to 2016, was inducted into the Indoor Football League Hall of Fame in 2015. On the ground, Calen Campbell will get the bulk of the carries. During the regular season he had 52 carries for 286 yards and 12 rushing touchdowns. Nolan Saraceni, who rushed for five touchdowns in two games, could see some carries out of the backfield as well. Brandon Sheperd is one of the IFL's better receivers, averaging an IFL fourth-best 61.7 yards per game to go along 17 touchdowns, which is tied for third. Kent Shelby finished with 42 receptions for 518 yards with 11 touchdowns, while Damian Ford had 33 catches for 552 yards and a team-high 14 scores.
T.J. Neal leads a talented Storm defense with 78 tackles to go along with 3.5 sacks, 7.5 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery. Claude Davis finished fourth in the league with 5.5 sacks and tallied 10.5 tackles for loss Charles Williams had 68 tackles, 3.5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss and a trio of fumble recoveries. Rick Rumph led the team with three interceptions and eight pass break ups. Lorenzo White, Jr. added two interceptions and Malcolm Goines recorded a pair of sacks. Williams and Goines also blocked two kicks apiece. Campbell returned 30 kickoffs for 16.3-yard average with two going for touchdowns. Sheperd posted a 16.0 kickoff return average. Parker Douglass, the IFL's all-time leading scorer with 875 points, converted on 43 of 55 extra point attempts and nine of 15 field goal tries with a long of 53 yards.
With the departure of last season's IFL Most Valuable Player, Barnstormers' quarterback Drew Powell, the coaching staff faced the daunting challenge of replacing him. Enter Neal, a similar-style QB out of Elizabeth City State University. He led the IFL with 59 touchdown passes while tallying a league second-best 188.7 yards through the air per game during the regular season. He completed 71 percent of his passes while tossing just three interceptions on the season. He also was a threat on the ground, rushing for 46.4 yards per game with two dozen trips to the end zone. Tyler was put on injured reserve late in the season, so the Barnstormers are likely to turn to Malik Brown, who gained 207 yards on 57 carries with four touchdowns during the season. Ryan Balentine, the Most Valuable Player of the United Bowl a year ago, was the top receiver in the league this season. He caught 89 passes for 1,084 yards and 28 touchdowns, leading the league in all three categories. Balentine's 77.4 receiving yards per game were over 11 yards better then the next receiver in the league. Connor Hollenbeck, who came over from Cedar Rapids over last off season, is a big target who had 58 catches for 627 yards and 14 touchdowns. Rounding out the receiving group is Jazeric Peterson, who racked up 41 receptions for 566 yards and 11 touchdowns in just 11 games.
The powerful Barnstormers' defense is led by Treyvon Williams, who was third in the IFL with 90 tackles over the course of the season. He also has 2.5 sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss Jourdan Wickliffe was fourth in the league with 8.4 tackles per game and had 4.5 tackles for loss.. The Barnstormers will be without Tyrell Pearson, who tied atop the league leaders with six interceptions. Tevin Madison picked off three passes and Jonah McCutcheon had two interceptions. Cordero Hayes, who led the team with seven pass break ups, also had an interception. B.J. Butler finished the season with six tackles for loss, six pass break ups and three blocks. Peterson and Balentine are likely to take on the kick return duties in Pearson's absence. Nathan Criswell made 58 of 71 of his extra point attempts and five of nine field goal tries with a long of 35 yards.
