Barnstormers 53, Bucks 22
6/12/21 --
BISMARCK, ND - The Bismarck Bucks scored 33 unanswered points for 30 straight minutes from late in the second to late in the third as they dominated the visiting Iowa Barnstormers tonight at Bismarck Event Center.
Bismarck's 53-22 win was its most dominant win since beginning play in the Indoor Football League in 2019. The Bucks have already doubled their win total from 2019 and now stand back above .500 at 4-3. They also avenged their 49-42 loss against the Barnstormers at Des Moines on May 29.
If was a bit of a reversal of fortunes for the Barnstormers, who dominated the Tucson Sugar Skulls last week, 33-13. The usually potent offense never was able to get going and an opportunistic Bucks team took advantage. The Barnstormers fell to 3-2 with the loss.
Bismarck opened up a 20-0 lead in the first quarter, starting with 19 and 18-yard scoring runs from Justin Rankin. WR J.T. Stokes' four-yard run put the Bucks up by that margin by the end of the opening quarter.
Iowa finally got on the board at the 11:54 mark of the second quarter on a 24-yard pass from Daquan Neal to Connor Hollenbeck. They even cut into the margin with an Evan Owens four-yard run with 3:55 left in the first half. That made the score 20-15 and it looked like a ball game.
However, the dam broke for the Barnstormers as the Bucks went on their 33-point run which started with Mike Carrigan's 54-yard kickoff return for a touchdown on the ensuing kick with 2:44 left in the half. The Bucks led 27-15 at the break.
Rankin scored on a three-yard run and Richard Stammetti found Stokes for a six-yard touchdown. The Bucks' defense got into the act with a safety late into the third quarter, and the Bucks led 43-15 going into the fourth.
Stammetti hot Stokes for a 10-yard score and later in the fourth, Cody Barber nailed a 37-yard field goal to put the Bucks up 50-15 with 2:44 left. Kentrez Bell caught a 32-yard touchdown from backup Vincent Espinoza and the Bucks were able to run out the clock from there.
Statistically, the game was fairly even as the Barnstormers outgained the Bucks in total offense; 144 yards to 129. Of note, the Barnstormers were flagged for 13 penalties for 55 yards, while the Bucks were penalized just three times for 25 yards.
Stammetti, who came in to relieve Glen Cuilellette, finished six of eight for 58 yards with a pair of touchdowns and no interceptions. Rankin added 47 yards off eight carries to his three scores. Stokes had three receptions for 30 yards to go with his two touchdown grabs. Deion Carter, Darreon Jackson and Penaia Moa each had five tackles for the Bucks defense.
The usually reliable Neal completed just two of 13 passes. Espinoza went two of four for 45 yards. Connor Hollenbeck caught two passes for 39 yards and a score to lead the Barnstormers' defense. Tony Jones and Gabriel McCoy has four tackles each for the Iowa defense.
The Barnstormers will be at home on June 19 as they host the Sioux Falls Storm at 5:05 p.m. The Bucks will visit the Green Bay Blizzard on June 18 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. All times listed are pacific daylight time. Click for the SCtoC 2021 Indoor Football League schedule.
