DES MOINES, IA - Elad Covaliu rushed for 65 yards and three touchdowns as the Iowa Barnstormers downed the visiting Sioux Falls Storm tonight, 57-47, at Wells Fargo Arena.
With the win, Iowa completes the season sweep over Sioux Falls for the first time in the teams' history. This was the second meeting between the teams this season as the Barnstormers won the season opener for both teams, 56-36 over the Storm. The Barnstormers move to 4-2 on the season, while the Storm fall to 3-3.
Nate Chavious' two-yard touchdown run put the Storm up early, but then the Barnstormers went on a 20-point run. Covaliu scored on a one-yard run and Daquan Neal ran in from 21 yards to put Iowa up 13-7 at the end of the opening quarter.
The Barnstormers added to the lead early in the second with a 34-yard touchdown run from Covaliu. Chavious rushed for a four-yard touchdown to pull Sioux Falls to within 20-14, but the Barnstormers added a 32-yard field goal from Gabriel Rui. Tommy Armstrong, Jr.'s five-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Smith cut Iowa's lead to 23-21 with 2:57 remaining. The Barnstormers scored twice in the final minute; first on a one-yard from from Neal and then on a 48-yard field goal from Gabriel Rui as time expired in the half. They led 33-21 at the break.
Iowa added to the lead with Covaliu's two-yard run on the Barnstormers' opening drive of the second half. Sioux Falls scored on a two-yard run from Brandon Sheperd midway through the third quarter before Iowa added a 48-yard field goal from Rui and the score was 43-28 heading into the final quarter.
The Barnstormers went up 50-28 when Neal found Carrigan Thompson for a 45-yard score. The Storm made a run with Armstrong hitting Alonzo Moore for a five-yard touchdown and, later in the fourth, he hit Sheperd for a 33-yard touchdown to make the score 50-40 with just over three minutes to play in regulation. Iowa all but iced the win with a four-yard touchdown from Neal to Thompson with 1:19. The Storm scored once more as Chavious ran it in from four yards out.
Neal finished the day completing 11 of 19 passes for 178 yards with two touchdowns, while rushing for another two. Thompson caught five balls for 86 yards and two scores, Covalui added a pair of catches for 44 yards to his rushing totals. Dorian Walker and Tony Jones led the Barnstormers' defense with nine and seven tackles, respectively, and Gabriel McCoy had a sack and an interception.
Lorenzo Brown, Jr. started the game, but was replaced in the second quarter by Armstrong who finished none of 14 for 111 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed for a pair of scores. Chavious scored three rushing touchdowns. Sheperd had six receptions for 89 yards and Smith finished with six grabs for 27 yards. Marquis Hendrix had seven tackles, while Ejoni Gershom had two tackles for loss for the Storm defense.
