7/10/21 --
WORCESTER, MA - Alejandro Bennifield threw five touchdown passes -- three to Thomas Owens -- as the Massachusetts Pirates held off a late Bismarck Bucks rally to emerge with a 43-38 win tonight at the DCU Center.
Massachusetts moves to a 6-3 record on the season, while the Bucks are now 5-5 after the loss. The Pirates won the first of the two games between the teams this season, on May 8 at Bismarck, by a 36-18 margin.
The Pirates scored on the first play from scrimmage when Alejandro Bennifield hit Thomas Owens on a 36-yard touchdown bomb. After the Bucks missed a field goal, Massachusetts added to their lead with a 24-yard touchdown toss from Bennifield. The Bucks got on the board with an 18-yard pass from Caleb Lewis to Andre Williams. Both Lewis and Williams were making their debuts for the Bucks. The Pirates led 13-6 at the end of the first quarter.
After Zuril Hendrick's interception of Bennifield at the beginning of the second quarter, Lewis hooked up with Williams again; this one of 22 yards to cut the Pirates' lead to 13-12 with 9:02 left in the quarter. Bennifield countered for Massachusetts with a nine-yard run around the left side. After a turnover on downs, the Pirates scored on a 32-yard pass from Bennifield to Owens. Kicker Josh Gable added the deuce on the following kickoff and the Pirates led 27-12 at the half.
Justin Rankin's 19-yard run pulled the Bucks to within 27-18 early in the fourth. Bennifield found Owens for a 21-yard score to go up by just over two touchdowns. Lewis connected with Williams for 20-yard touchdown, but Massachusetts came back with a 18-yard touchdown pass from Bennifield to Laquvionte Gonzalez with two seconds remaining in the third quarter to five them a 40-24 lead.
Bismarck pulled to within a single possession on Lewis' one-yard plunge. He hit Williams for the two-point conversion to make it a 40-32 Pirates lead just over four minutes into the fourth. Gable's 23-yard field goal put the Pirates up by nine with 5:13 left. The Bucks scored again on a two-yard run from Rankin. After Williams recovered Barber's onside kick for Bismarck, the Bucks had one more shot with just under a minute left but time ran out.
The Bucks will host the Frisco Fighters on July 16 at 4:05 p.m. The Pirates will be at home as they host the Arizona Rattlers on July 18 for a 10:05 a.m. kickoff. All times listed are pacific daylight time. Click for the complete SCtoC 2021 Indoor Football League schedule.
