Shock 45, Sugar Skulls 34
7/17/21 --
SPOKANE, WA - It was a battle of running backs but, in the end, it was Davonte Sapp-Lynch who was able to put his team over the hump as the Spokane Shock defeated the Tucson Sugar Skulls tonight at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena.
Spokane's win improves its record to 6-2 on the season and into a tie for second place in the Indoor Football League standings with the Frisco Fighters. Frisco currently holds the tiebreaker due to its 36-33 win over the Shock in the season opener for the teams on May 15. The Sugar Skulls fell to 2-7 with the loss. This was the first-ever meeting between the Shock and the Sugar Skulls, and the only time they play one another this season.
Both running backs scored four times. Sapp-Lynch had three touchdowns rushing and a kickoff return for a score for the Shock. Mike Jones of the Sugar Skulls Jones rushed for four scores.
"I feel it's great to come out on top; I definitely respect Mike Jones as a running back," Sapp-Lynch said told KREM sports director Brenna Greene after the game. "Anytime me and him are playing in the same game, I always got a little chip on my shoulder, you know, to do a little better because me and him have been battling since 2019 when I was with Nebraska so it's good to see him again; good to see he (hasn't lost) a step and we get to continue to complete."
The Sugar Skulls scored on their opening possession with an eight-yard run from Jones. The Shock countered with a touchdown toss from Blake Sims to Keyvan Rudd to know the score at 7-7 midway through the first quarter. Tucson took the lead with 3:56 seconds left in the quarter on Jimmy Camacho's 23-yard field goal before Spokane scored on an 11-yard run from Davonte Sapp-Lynch as time expired. The Shock led 14-10 at the end of one.
Each team missed long field goals early in the second quarter. The first score of the quarter came on a Sapp-Lynch six-yard run around the left side. Though Sawyer Petre's point after try went wide left, the Shock scored on a rouge after they swarmed Sugar Skulls' returner in the end zone. Demry Croft hit Mike Jones on an 11-yard touchdown down the right sideline. It was 21-17 in favor of the Shock at halftime.
Sawyer Petre hit a field goal to put Spokane up by a field goal five minutes into the third quarter. The Sugar Skulls capitalized on an eight-minute drive with a two-yard run from Croft to tie the game with 1:47 left in the quarter. The Shock came back on the ensuing kickoff as Sapp-Lynch returned the kick down the right sideline 57 yards for the score and Spokane was back up by a touchdown at 31-24.
Tucson pulled to within 31-27 on Camacho's 23-yard field goal. Spokane responded quickly, scoring on a six-yard sweep from receiver Kamrin Solomon. The Sugar Skulls once again cut the Shock lead to four with 5:11 with Mike Jones' run from a yard out. After recovering the Sugar Skulls' onside kick attempt, Sapp-Lynch scored on an 11-yard run to put the Shock up 45-34. The Shock defense forced a turnover on downs and the offense was able to run out the clock to preserve the win.
The Shock will visit the Duke City Gladiators on July 24 at 6:05 p.m. The Sugar Skulls will host the Bismarck Bucks on June 24 with kickoff set for 6:05 p.m. All times listed are pacific daylight time. Click for the complete SCtoC 2021 Indoor Football League schedule.
