TUCSON, AZ - The Tucson Sugar Skulls kept their playoff hops alive with a comeback win over the Duke City Gladiators tonight at Tucson Event Center.
Tucson still needs to win its season finale next week and get some help, but they may just be able to sneak into the playoffs as a lower seed. The Gladiators took a step back in their playoff run, but are still in position to make the postseason. They are 6-7 after the loss.
The Sugar Skulls win completes a season sweep of the Gladiators and could come into play should the teams end up tied in the standings after next week's slate of games.
2021 Head to Head
May 30 - Sugar Skulls 55, Gladiators 35.
July 10 - Sugar Skulls 41, Gladiators 40.
Duke City held a 14-point lead with 2:31 left in the fourth. Tucson, fighting for their playoff lives, outscored Duke City 32-14 in the final quarter, including the final two scores of the game. The Sugar Skulls scored on a 40-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Balentine with just under two minutes remaining. They took the lead with six seconds left on Murphy's one-yard run and the Gladiators were unable to counter.
The Sugar Skulls' Murphy completed 17 of 23 passes for 195 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. Mike Jones gained 39 yards on nine carries with a pair of trips to the end zone. Balentine finished with nine receptions for 130 yards and three touchdowns, and Juju Augustine had four grabs for 41 yards and a score. Malik Boynton paced the defense with eight tackles.
Nate Davis went 15 of 22 for 237 yards with four touchdowns. Raymond Taylor had his best outing of the season, rushing seven times for 65 yards and two scores. Dello Davis finished with five receptions for 78 yards and a touchdown, and Jared Elmore had four catches for 61 yards and two touchdowns. Xavier Amey added three receptions for 58 yards and a score. Charles Reid led the Gladiators defense with nine tackles, and Antwan Smith finished with eight tackles and an interception.
The Gladiators will host the Bismarck Bucks on August 21 at 6:05 p.m. to close out the season. The Sugar Skulls will visit the Northern Arizona Wrangler in their season finale; also on August 21 at 6:05 p.m. All times listed are pacific daylight time.
