Rattlers 58, Gladiators 55
9/5/21 --
PHOENIX, AZ - Don't sent Gladiators to a dogfight.
In a see-saw battle, the Arizona Rattlers emerged with a 58-55 win over the Duke City Gladiators in the Indoor Football League playoff semifinals today at the Footprint Center. The win earns the Rattlers a berth in the United Bowl for the third time in the four seasons they have been in the United Bowl (we don't count 2020 since the season was eventually cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
The Rattlers will host the Massachusetts Pirates in the United Bowl on September 12 at the Footprint Center in Phoenix. The Rattlers' 2019 trip to the United Bowl ended with a 56-53 loss to the Sioux Falls Storm in the semifinals. The Storm ended up winning the United Bowl that year. They defeated the Storm in the 2017 United Bowl, 50-41, in the 2017 United Bowl.
The Rattlers met the Pirates just once this season, losing to Massachusetts by a 68-44 tally. The Pirates' defense all but stifled Arizona in the first half, opening up a 32-14 halftime lead. They held on in the second half to capture the win.
Arizona and Duke City met twice during the regular season with the results listed below.
2021 Regular Season Head to Head
June 19 - Rattlers 51, Gladiators (H) 36
July 31 - Rattlers (H) 60, Gladiators 48
Duke City marched 46 yards downfield on its opening drive, culminating with a two-yard touchdown pass from Nate Davis to Dello Davis on the left side of the end zone. Arizona answered when Jarrod Harrington returned the ensuing kickoff 56 yards to tie it at 7-7 six minutes into the game. The Gladiators went back on top with a one-yard touchdown run around the right side from Raymond Taylor. After Dexter Rease's interception of Rattlers quarterback Drew Powell, the Gladiators went up 21-7 on Nate Davis' 10-yard touchdown pass to Jared Elmore.
The Rattlers pulled to within a touchdown on the opening drive of the second quarter courtesy of a five-yard run from Powell. Nate Davis was intercepted by Tyrell Pearson, giving the Rattlers the ball in their own territory. The Rattlers tied the game with 2:19 in the quarter on a two-yard run from Powell. The Gladiators struck back late in the quarter on a two-yard run from Nate Davis. Kevin Goessling's extra point try was blocked by Josh Gordon and scooped up by Pearson who returned it into the end zone for two points for the Rattlers. Arizona got the ball back and drove deep into Duke City territory, but time expired before they could score. The Gladiators led 27-23 at intermission.
Arizona took its first lead of the game when Drew Powell ran it in from a yard out just under four minutes left in the third quarter. Duke City went back on top with a 29-yard bomb from Nate Davis to a wide open Dello Davis. The Rattlers answered with a four-yard run from Darrell Monroe around the right side. Duke City ended up when excellent field possession after Arizona's onside kick failed to go 10 yards. The Gladiators answered with a four-yard touchdown from Nate Davis to Taylor at the 3:39 mark in the quarter. Duke City led 41-37 at the end of three.
The Rattlers took a 44-41 lead early in the fourth with a five-yard run from Monroe. The Davis-to-Davis connection put the Gladiators back up when the duo connected for a eight-yard touchdown at the 9:35 mark of the final quarter. The Rattlers went up 51-48 on a 23-yard touchdown pass from Powell to Jamal Miles. Duke City took the lead again with 2:34 to go on a Nate Davis 19-yard pass to Dello Davis. The Rattlers went up 58-55 with 18 seconds left on Monroe's three-yard run.
That gave the Gladiators one last shot. Dello Davis returned the ensuing kickoff to the 10 yard line, but fumbled forward. The ball was recovered by Duke City at the one yard line with seven seconds remaining. Nate Davis hit Elmore in the back of the end zone with three seconds left. However, Xavier Amey, not the intended receiver, was called for offensive pass interference. Amey, who was in front of the defender who had both hands on him, was facing his quarterback, causing objection from the Gladiators coaches and bench. The Gladiators elected to try a field goal to send the game into overtime, but Goessling's kick went wide right as time expired which allowed the Rattlers to escape with the win.
Powell and Monroe each ran for three touchdowns for the Rattlers. Nate Davis finished with five touchdown passes; four to Dello Davis for the Gladiators.
