Breakdown
FIGHTERS
Frisco came out like gangbusters in its inaugural 2021 season, reeling off five straight wins. The Fighters first-ever loss actually didn't come until July 2 to these Pirates by a touchdown. They previously had defeated the Pirates in Worchester in week 8. This Frisco team looks quite a bit different than last season, however. Clint Dolezel has moved as head coach to take a position in the private sector. He has been replaced by veteran head coach Billy Back, who coached the now-defunct Spokane Shock. The training camp roster has been mixed up a bit as well. Notable re-signing include dual-threat quarterback Jerrod Heard, wide receiver Mark Munson and defensive lineman Charles Williams. The Fighters were aggressive in free agency and brought in some very notable talent on both sides of the ball. Trent "T.J." Edwards and former Shock QB Blake Sims were brought into compete for the quarterback spot. Williams gets some help on the D-line with former Pirate J.D. Griggs, and defensive back Cedric Poole came to camp from the Shock. Add to that on the offensive side running backs Justin Rankin and Speedy Noil, as well as receivers Sheldon Augustine and Laquvionte Gonzalez, who was a key piece in last season's championship run as a member of the Pirates.
PIRATES
Massachusetts finds itself in both the enviable and unenviable position of defending its first championship in franchise history. The Pirates started out a little slow in 2021, going just 3-3 in their first six games. They then put together a eight-game winning streak to finish the regular season in second place. After dispensing of the Bismarck Bucks in the first found, they defeated these Fighters to move on to the United Bowl. With kicker Josh Gable sidelined for the playoffs, the Pirates brought in former Super Bowl champion Garrett Hartley. After stopping the Rattlers on the first possession in overtime, Hartley nailed the game-winning 31-yard field goal to give Massachusetts the win. Like the Fighters, the Pirates have undergone some changes heading into 2022. Patrick Pass has moved into the front office and Rayshaun Kizer is now at the helm. Kizer worked last year as the on-the-field coach for the team. Massachusetts brought back several key players on offense; notably quarterback Alejandro Bennifield and wide receiver Thomas Owens; the latter of which who was one of the top receivers in the league last year. Defensively, the team re-signed defensive backs Khalid Wooten and Chucky Williams. They also brought former Shock Dominick Sanders into training camp in the backfield.
