Breakdown
BARNSTORMERS
Iowa will look to get back to the playoffs in 2022 after having their season cut short in the first round of the playoffs In fact, it was the Duke City Gladiators who defeated them twice at Wells Fargo Arena last year. The first was a week 5 loss in overtime by eight points. The second was a season-ending Gladiators' win in the opening round of the playoffs. This year's team is revamped. head coach les Moss moved on to take the helm of the Northern Arizona Wranglers, and quarterback Daquan Neal is now with another Arizona team; the Tucson Sugar Skulls. Step in Dave Mogensen who will attempt to turn the team around with a roster which is young, but has plenty of talent to go around. Only one quarterback has reportedly been signed by the team (according to current research) and that would be Tez Nunnery of Wisconsin's Lakeland University. Surely, another signal caller or two are in camp, but have not been reported by the team nor the league. Some notable training camp names at wide receiver include Kentrez Bell, Eric Thomas, Jr. and Alex Wheat, Jr. it will likely be a young group on the defense, though camp invites include defensive back Jordan Baldwin (formerly of the Sioux Falls Storm), and defensive lineman Rashad Payne, who played last year with the NAL's Jacksonville Sharks. Gabriel Rui returns to handle the kicking duties.
STEAMWHEELERS
Quad City didn't have the result in the season opener last week for which they had hoped. That very well could come down to some early season jitters and lack of familiarity with one another to start the season. This is their home opener and their first home game since 33 months. David Perkins took the majority of snaps at quarterback for the Steamwheelers, but completed less than 50 percent of his passes for just 28 years, though one of those completions went for a touchdown. He replaced by IFL veteran Aaron Aiken, who had started. It would only be speculation to presume which quarterback might get the nod in game 2. Kerrion Moore averaged 5.3 yards per carry and returned a kickoff for a touchdown last week against the Storm. Keyvan Rudd and Mike Carrigan are still top targets at receiver. Darreon Jackson and Malik Duncan pace a talented defense, which includes Nathan Sheets and Jaylin Swan, who recorded a sack in week 1. Jackson had a 50-yard interception return to go with his team-leading 10 tackles. Kimo Naehu was a bright spot in Quad City's offense as hit made two field goal tries (27 and 29 yards) and averaged 47 yards on his kickoffs. The Steamwheelers did not qualify the playoffs in their first full season in 2019, but Corey Ross' group will look to kick start their season with a win against their new regional rival in this one.
