Breakdown
PANTHERS
Bay Area made a splash in its Monday night win over the San Diego Strike force. Quarterback Cory Murphy led his team on a last-minute drive, culminating on a one-yard plunge into the end zone. Follow that up by a defensive goalline stand at the end, and the Panthers win their first-ever IFL game. This week, however, they will not be in the friendly confines of the SAP Center. It will be the first road test for the expansion Panthers, who will be chomping at the bit to go 2-0 on the young season. Murphy threw for a touchdown and rushed for two others as the offense seemed to get better as the game went along. Backup Joe Newman is a change-of-pace player who can make things happen on the ground. Bay Area found a workhorse in the backfield in Jordan Cronkrite who should be a difference maker this season. Daniel Crowell, Jr. leads a talented, though young, group of receivers who should mesh with Murphy and the offense as the season goes along. Defensively, the Panthers held the Strike Force on a pair of goalline stands and appear to be a stout group with Lawrence Ross III anchoring the defensive line.
WRANGLERS
Northern Arizona had trouble get going in their opener last week against the Vegas Knight Hawks, there is plenty of work to do to prepare for their home opener. Veteran head coach Les Moss is the guy to get it done. Kaleb Barker got the start under center, but completed just over 31 percent of his passes with a pair of interceptions. He did rush for a touchdown late in the game but, by then, it was too late. P.J. Settles is the backup, but both of his throws went incomplete. The Wranglers had trouble getting Stanley "Boom" Williams going in the running game, so that should be a point of improvement in game 2. Williams led the team with a pair of catches for 15 yards, so there is some option to seeing the passing game out of the backfield be an opportunity. Glen Gibbons and Quentin Richardson were the only receivers to catch passes against the Knight Hawks. The passing game should improve over time with Moss' coaching. Defensive back Mercardo Anderson and linebacker Darin Hungerford lead the defense which, despite the loss in week 1, held the Knight Hawks to just 22 points. JaQuan Artis picked up a sack in the game.
