Breakdown
FIGHTERS
Had it not been for a Massachusetts Pirates' field goal at the end of regulation in week 1, Frisco might have had a chance to go into overtime and pick up a win in their season opener. The Fighters will have a chance to pick up that win with this visit to the Gladiators. Former Spokane Shock Blake Sims had the better night of the two quarterbacks to see action in the opener. He completed 67 percent of his throws with two touchdowns and a pick. T.J. Edwards was more of a threat in the ground than through the air with his 32 rushing yards. Justin Rankin, who came over from the Bismarck Bucks during the offseason, averaged 7.3 yards per carry with a pair of scores for the Fighters defense. Rankin also had touchdown catch in that game. Mark Munson and Laquvionte Gonzalez lead a talented receiving group. Veterans Malcolm Goines, Sr. and Charles Williams led the team in tackles and the duo anchors Frisco's defense; a defense which also features linebacker Santos Ramirez and Cedric Poole; the latter of whom had an interception in the opener.
GLADIATORS
A viewer who watched just the first half of Duke City's season opening loss to the Arizona Rattlers last week might come to the conclusion that this team is ready to stand toe-to-toe with any other in the league. There is talent on head coach Billy Back's roster which should gel, but an injury to quarterback Nate Davis is draws a question mark to the offense. Davis led the league in passing last season, but is out with a knee injury. Next man up at the position is newly signed Ramone Atkins out of New Mexico Highlands University. Atkins has never seen action in an IFL game, but head coach Sherman Carter was impressed with his throws in practice earlier this week. Davontae Jackson rushed for 56 yards and a pair of touchdowns against the Rattlers. Dello Davis, Gregory Dent, Jr. and Jared Elmore make up a trio that could rank near the top in the league this season. Robert Brown and Byron Cooper are leaders of the defense in terms of tackles. Despite allowing 50 points to the Rattlers, Roderick Chapman and Charles Reid each recorded an interception.
