Tucson came out strong in its season opener, outscoring the Vegas Knight Hawks 28-13 in the second half en route to a nine-point win. The Sugar Skulls started out just the way they wanted to as they look to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2019. Daquan Neal picked up his pace from his last two seasons with the Iowa Barnstormers as Tucson's quarterback in his debut with his new team. Neal completed 72 percent of his passes for 178 yards with four scoring tosses. Neal reunites with his former Barnstormers coach, Dixie Wooten, with the Sugar Skulls. Mike Jones does enough in the rushing game to keep opposing defenses honest. the team's all-time leading rusher hit the end zone twice in the opener. Arthur Jackson got off to a strong start on the season with seven catches for 80 yards and three touchdowns. Former Quad City Steamwheeler Quinton Pedroza amassed 55 yards off a pair of receptions. Carrington Thompson, Sr. also caught a scoring pass. Linebacker Connor Taylor and Brandon Rowland pace the defense, while Tony Winslow recorded a sack last week. Logan Justus handles the kicking duties for Tucson.

Frisco picked up its first win of the season last week, a overwhelming 60-33 win over the Duke City Gladiators. It was just what the doctor ordered for the Fighters, who were coming off a bye after being turned away in week 1 by the defending champion Massachusetts Pirates. Head coach Billy Back's Fighters utilize a dual-quarterback system with Blake Sims and T.J. Edwards. Sims is completing 72 percent of his throws along with five touchdowns and two interceptions, and is averaging 105 passing yards per game. Edwards is completing 58 percent of his passes with three scores. Justin Rankin is averaging 45 rushing yards per game and has a pair of trips to the end zone on the young season. He also has a touchdown catch. Juju Augustine comes in with six catches for 97 yards and two touchdowns, while Jerminic Smith leads the team with four touchdowns to go with 92 yards off seven receptions.
