Breakdown
RATTLERS
Arizona is exactly where it expected to be after its first two games. Namely, that is at the top of the IFL's Western Conference standings with a pair of dominant wins; one at home and the other on the road. The Rattlers look like the team to beat as they work to make their way back to the United Bowl this season. Drew Powell, the former United Bowl champion with the Iowa Barnstormers in 2018, has been as good as advertised through the first pair of games of the season. Powell is completing 71 percent of his throws and has 239 yards with six touchdowns and two interceptions on the season. He also averages 51 rushing yards per game with a touchdown. Calvin Phillips had 55 rushing yards last week, as well as a score on the ground. Jamal Miles has a rushing touchdown, in addition to six receptions for 59 yards and a score. Braxton Haley leads the team with seven receptions and 108 yards to go along with a score. Todd Athey and Isaiah Huston each have two touchdown catches. Davontae Merriweather and Treyvon Williams lead the defensive group, while the latter has a pair of sacks this season. Ernesto Lacayo is one of the more reliable kickers in the league.
GLADIATORS
Duke City was poised to take the Arizona Rattlers down to the wire in their week 2 season opener, but an injury to quarterback Nate Davis led to the Gladiators being shut out in that game. In their home opener, they were handed a decisive 27-point loss. At this early point in the season, the Gladiators are looking to kickstart their season. It's not going to be easy as they face one of the IFL's perennial teams this week. Ramone Atkins, who had never thrown a pass in an IFL game, was signed before week 3 and did a serviceable job; perhaps the best that could have been expected for such a raw IFL talent. He completed 56 percent of his passes for 54 yards with a touchdown and a n interception. He figures to start in the short term until Davis comes back into the fold. Jared Elmore leads the team with seven catches for 79 yards and two touchdowns, while three other receivers have each caught a score. Dent, who also plays some defense couples with the likes of Darius Thomas, Byron Cooper and Jayson Serda on that side of the ball. Cooper has a sack and Dexter Reese has intercepted an opponent's pass for the group. Veteran Cody Barber handles kicking duties.
