Breakdown
PANTHERS
Bay Area has dropped two straight since their season-opening win over the San Diego Strike Force. The Panthers have been outscored 102-47 combined in those losses. This visit to New Mexico to face a struggling Duke City team could be just what the veterinarian ordered for the Panthers. With Cory Murphy sidelined due to injury, Joe Newman got the start in last week's 26-point loss to the Vegas Knight Hawks. Newman has completed just eight of his 26 attempts for 100 yards with a touchdown and four interceptions this season. Newman leads the team in rushing with 119 yards and three scores. Veteran Vincent Espinoza was signed just before the game against Vegas and hit two of four attempts for 22 yards and an interception. He could get the nod in this one. Duane Gary has 81 rushing yards to go alone with three scores. Deondre Douglas, Kameron Pleasant and Nick Brassell are the targets in the passing game. Derik Calhoun and Brandon Dabney lead the defense, and Raysean Pringle lead the defensive charge. Stevie Artique has been a bright spot in the kicking game for the Panthers this season.
GLADIATORS
Duke City has struggled on both sides of the ball through their first three games. The Gladiators are third-to-last in scoring at 27.3 points per game, and last with 50.1 points allowed per contest. Quarterback Nate Davis went down in the middle of their season-opener, and they haven't been able to recover at the position. Wide receiver Dello Davis was released prior to week 4, but was re-signed on Monday. The Gladiators find themselves in new territory. Veteran Caleb Holbrook has completed 16 of 51 throws for 169 yards with seven touchdowns and six interceptions, but the team may go with Ramone Atkins who completed 56 percent of his passes for 54 yards with a touchdown and a pick in his action this season. Devonte Jackson leads the team in rushing with 70 yards and a pair of trips into the end zone. Gregory Dent, Jr. and Jared Elmore each have caught 10 passes for 146 and 106 yards, respectively. Elmore leads the team with four touchdown grabs. Byron Cooper paces the defense with 19 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Jason Serda and Dexter Reese are playmakers as well. Veteran Cody Barber handles the kicking duties.
