Breakdown
BARNSTORMERS
Iowa scored its season-high of 47 points in last week's win over the Sioux Falls Storm and seem to be off to a strong start. The Barnstormers have reeled of three straight wins on the season, thanks to a pesky defense and an emerging offense, after falling on the road to the Quad City Steamwheelers in their season opener. This visit to Massachusetts will be a calling card, as the Pirates want to bounce back after their 14-game winning streak was ended in overtime by the Green Bay Blizzard last week. Darius-James Peterson has been solid as the team's new quarterback; completing 60 percent of his passes for 539 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions. He also leads the team with 42 rushes for 181 yards and six scored. Kentrez Bell leads the team in receiving, though he did not see action last week. Alvin Bailey has 138 yards through the air, and Dom McNeil is second on the team with three touchdown catches. Jordan Baldwin's 34 total tackles lead the defense. Ian McBorrough and Justic'e Kind come in with 27 and 22 tackles, respectively, and each have an interception on their 2022 resumes. Former Pirate Gabriel Rui is one of the better kickers in the league, and can be dangerous in close contests.
PIRATES
Massachusetts comes into this one after suffering its first loss in 15 games (dating back to last season). The Pirates are bailing out the hull over the week and will be ready for the Barnstormers when they soar into town. As the defending champions, they have a target on their back and this could either be redemption for last week's loss, or a bit of a trap game against a talented and improving Barnstormers' squad which had won three straight. These teams have won two of the last four United Bowls. Last year's United Bowl MVP, Alejandro Bennifield, has returned to form as the Pirates' quarterback. He is completing 62 percent of his passes for 693 yards with 15 touchdowns and just three interceptions. He also has a pair of scores on the ground. Martez Carter leads the rushing attack with 108 yards. Thomas Owens is second in the IFL with 298 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. Isaac Zico is a threat to score on any given snap, having a trio of touchdown catches on the year, and Carter had a touchdown grab last week. Khalid Wooten leads the defense with 19 tackles, while Aarion Maxey-Penton is a playmaker with a team-high two interceptions. Recently signed Craig "The Leg" Peterson is one of the best indoor/arena kickers out there.
