Breakdown
SUGAR SKULLS
Tucson enters its fourth IFL season (fourth full season, not counting the COVID-19 shutdown year of 2020) and the franchise has had success, making the playoffs in three seasons. However, they have never advanced past the first round. Ramone Atkins comes over from Duke City where he immediately made his impact as one of the league's top passers. He completed 57.5 percent of his throws for 2,169, with 50 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He added 311 yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground. Mike Jones is one of the IFL's top running backs and will take on the role as the team's lead running back. Carrington Thompson, Sr. returns to the Sugar Skulls to lead the receiver group which features four newcomers to the team. Defensive backs Mike Minter and Rashie Hodge, and defensive linemen Isame Faciane and Ronald Collins are back to anchor the defense. Victor Leventritt will take on the kicking duties.
STRIKE FORCE
San Diego dropped its season opener at home, but indicated that it will not be a pushover in the IFL this season. They nearly tied the game with 20 seconds left, but quarterback Demry Croft's run for the two-point conversation was short of the goal line. Former Sugar Skull Croft did start in the game, but came in late in the first quarter. He completed 19 of 29 of his passes for 174 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed for a score. Marques Rodgers hauled nine passes for 79 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed for 23 yards. Kentrez Bell's two touchdown grabs came on his four catches and 44 yards, and Dez Stewart caught six passes for 57 yards. The defense was very balanced in the opener with Clayton Glasco leading the way with 5.5 tackles and Lawrence White IV's four. Javian Williams and Ben Moa are defensive players on which to keep an eye. Aedan Johnson is the teams kicker.
