Steamwheelers 47, Storm 30
5/12/23 --
MOLINE, IL -
On Friday Night, the Sioux Falls Storm and Quad City Steamwheelers played the third and final game of their regular season series at Vibrant Arena at the MARK. E.J. Hilliard continued to build his IFL MVP case, with a seven-touchdown performance to propel Quad City to an important Eastern Conference victory by a score of 47-30.
Quad City began the game with the ball and needed just two plays to light up the scoreboard, with Hilliard finding Mike Carrigan for 17 yards. Newly acquired kicker Nick Gauna would account for the first three Storm points of the game on a made field goal. The Storm would stop the Steamwheelers on Quad City’s next possession, but Marquis Hendrix would get his hands on a Lorenzo Brown pass for a pivotal interception. The first quarter would come to a close, with Quad City up 7-3 with possession of the ball.
On the first play of the second quarter, Hilliard would find Keyvan Rudd on a quick out-route for a two-yard touchdown pass, increasing Quad City’s lead to 11. The Storm had no response, going four-and-out and coming up empty. Hilliard would take the offense on a four-play scoring drive, which he capped off with a 12-yard run. Needing a big play down 21-3, Sioux Falls got exactly what they needed, with Brown connecting with a wide-open Draysean Hudson on a 30-yard bomb. The Steamwheelers next drive would take the game inside the one-minute warning, but the Storm defense stayed strong and forced a 34-yard field goal attempt, which Chase Allbaugh missed wide right. With an opportunity to pull within one score, the Storm took advantage, with a late score by Brown thanks to a 12-yard TD run. The half closed on a 13-0 Storm run to bring them within five points, 21-16, at halftime.
With the opening possession of the second half, Sioux Falls would take its first lead of the game, 23-21, with Bryson Denley finding the endzone on a four-yard TD run. Perhaps the turning point of the game, Hilliard made a brilliant 20-yard scramble on a 3rd and 18 to keep the next Steamwheeler possession alive, and completed the drive with his second rushing score of the game (12 yards). Quad City would again intercept Brown, this time thanks to Darreon Jackson, who entered tonight 2nd in the IFL with 5 picks on the season. After a nice return, Hilliard wasted little time in earning his third rushing touchdown of the game, a one-yard bunny to give Quad City a 34-23 lead. Sioux Falls would claw their way back in the game, with Donnie Corley Jr. on the receiving end of a one-yard TD pass from Brown to end the quarter and make the score 34-30 Quad City.
To begin the fourth quarter, Hilliard found a wide-open Keyvan Rudd for a 13-yard touchdown pass, marking Hilliard’s third passing score of the game and sixth overall. Again, Quad City’s defense shined on the next drive, forcing another Sioux Falls four-and-out. It would not take long for Hilliard to make them pay, as a nine-yard rush would mark Hilliard’s fourth rushing score of the contest. Desperate for a score late in the fourth quarter, Sioux Falls could not get the offense going, with another four-and-out spelling the end of any viable comeback bid. The end of the game featured a few unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and unusual play selections, but none of that ended up having any impact on the game’s final result, as Quad City would come out on top, 47-30.
[These individual player statistics only contain the confirmed plays from the game, as a brief outage made much of the first quarter unwatchable on YouTube. These should NOT be considered official and should only serve as a guide. All scoring plays have been verified, however.]
E.J. Hilliard was the Man of the Match for the Quad City Steamwheelers, completing 10-of-17 passes for 121 yards, three touchdown, and no interceptions. On the ground, he carried 13 times for 89 yards and four touchdowns. Keyvan Rudd caught five passes on six targets for 44 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Darreon Jackson recorded an interception, tying him with Michael LoVett of the Frisco Fighters with six on the season thus far.

Draysean Hudson (2/43/1) and Donnie Corley Jr (2/18/1) each had a touchdown reception for Sioux Falls, while Cole Thurness led all Storm receivers with 56 yards receiving.
