GREEN BAY, WI - The Green Bay Blizzard blew out to a 27-0 first quarter lead, then spend three quarters holding off the visiting San Diego Strike Force tonight at the Resch Center, 61-50.
With the win, the Blizzard improve to 3-4 on the season and 2-3 at home. Green Bay remains in fifth place in the Eastern Conference, but drew closer to the fourth-place Sioux Falls Storm. San Diego fell to 2-5 and 2-2 on the road. despire their mark, they are guaranteed to be at least within two games of a playoff spot after week 9's action concludes.
This is the only meeting between the teams this season and just the second time they've played one another in their respective histories. Green Bay defeated San Diego 53-45 on March 24, 2019 -- over four years ago.
Green Bay received the opening kickoff. They scored on a 24-yard touchdown bomb from Ja'rome Johnson to Marquise Irvin on fourth-and-five to take the early lead. After the ensuing kickoff doinked off the crossbar, the Blizzard's Raheem Harvey recovered the ball in the end zone for another Green Bay score. Suddenly, the Blizzard were up 14-0 with 11:29 to go in the opening quarter. The Blizzard defense forced a 50-yard field goal try from San Diego's Kevin Goessling, but the kick went wide to the right and Green Bay had the ball at their own five. Johnson suffered what appeared to be a right knee injury on the Blizzard's next drive and was replaced by Max Meylor. Steve Newbold's 13-yard touchdown from Meylor put the Blizzard up by three scores. Green Bay's defense came up big again, forcing a turnover on downs at the Strike Force eight-yard line. The Blizzard capitalized as time expired in the quarter on an eight-yard strike to the left side to Newbold. The Blizzard led 27-0 at the end of the opening quarter.
Travon Van's two-yard run early in the second quarter put the Strike Force on the board. The Blizzard added to their lead with nine minutes left in the second on an eight-yard run from Terrence Smith around the left side. San Diego struck back on a 12-yard strike to Kentrez Bell across the middle to pull the Strike Force back to within three scores. Green Bay's logan Justus attempted a 19-yard field goal as time expired, but it sailed wide left. The Blizzard held a 37-13 lead at intermission.
San Diego opened the scoring in the third quarter when Van rushed up the middle from two yards out. Trevaughn McNeil recovered Goessling's line drive kickoff to give the Blizzard the ball at the San Diego 12. Green Bay responded with a two-yard run around the left guard from Smith. The Strike Force responded on a play-action keeper around the left side from Davis. He rushed up the middle for the two-point conversion to make it a two-score game with just under five minutes remaining. Smith scampered around the left side, broke a tackle and rushed in to complete a 25-yard touchdown run with 1:05 left in the third. San Diego came right back, scoring on a 22-yard pass down the right side from Davis to Bell. Davis found Carlos Thompson, Jr. in the back of the end zone for the two-point conversion. Green Bay's lead was 47-36 heading into the final quarter.
Meylor extended Green Bay's lead five minutes into the fourth when he scampered around the left side for a score. Davis found Thompson for an eight-yard touchdown with just over four minutes left. Davis found Van for the two-point conversion to draw the Strike Force to within a 54-44 deficit. Smith provided the icing on the cake on Smith's 12-yard touchdown around the right guard just within the one-minute warning. But, the Strike Force weren't done. Davis found Marques Rodgers for a 12-yard touchdown up the middle. Davis' pass for the two-point conversion went over his intended receiver's head. Ravarius Rivers collected Goessling's onside kick attempt with 45 seconds remaining and the Blizzard ran out the clock.
Meylor completed 12 of 16 passes for 119 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Smith's four-touchdown night came on his 14 carries for 69 yards. Irvin caught five touchdowns for 67 yards, while Newbold's two touchdowns came on his only two catches of the game. Trevon Claybourne led the Blizzard defense with six tackles and Rafiq Abdul-Wahid recorded a sack.
Davis went 15 of 28 for 185 yards with four touchdowns through the air and one on the ground. Bell caught five passes for 89 yards and two touchdowns, while Rodgers had four grabs for 48 yards and a score. Thompson added a pair of receptions for 18 yard to go along with his touchdown score. Ben Moa paced the Strike Force defense with six tackles, and Brandon Mayes and DJ Morgan had five tackles apiece.
Green Bay held the advantage in total offense, 240 yards to 188, though San Diego had a 185-144 edge in the passing game. The Blizzard out-rushed the Strike Force, 96 to six yards on the ground. Both teams were heavily penalized. The Blizzard committed 14 penalties for 122 yards, while the Strike Force were flagged 10 times for 99 yards.
