Blizzard 43, Barnstormers 17

DES MOINES, IA - The Green Bay Blizzard built on a second quarter lead and dominated the second half as they kept their playoff hopes alive with a 43-17 win over the Iowa barnstormers tonight at Wells Fargo Arena.
With the win, the Blizzard evened up their record at 5-5 and remain in fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings; just a half game behind the Sioux Falls Storm. The Storm were on their final bye of the season this week. The Barnstormers fell to 1-9 on what can only be described as a disappointing season.
The Blizzard had won both previous games this season over the Barnstormers; 44-25 on March 31 and 57-41 on May 20. Both games were at Green Bay. This win allowed them to complete the sweep. Iowa still leads the overall series, 15-11.
Max Meylor completed 12 of 20 passes for 107 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions for the Blizzard. He also rushed for 65 yards and a score. Terrence Smith rushed for 73 yards off 14 carries and three touchdowns. He also had five receptions for 30 yards. Allaah Sessions and Diondre Wallace each had seven tackles each, and Bakari Triggs intercepted a pair of Barnstormers passes Jamal Holloway and Delrick Canty came away with a sack apiece.
Henry Ogala, who replaced Zach Reader in the second quarter, went seven of 13 for 74 yards with an interception. He also rushed for 21 yards and two touchdowns. Caleb Smith led Barnstormers receivers with three catches for 26 yards. Dameon Willis Jr., playing in his first game for Iowa, led all defenders with 10 tackles.
Green Bay had a decided edge in total offense, 245 yards to 128. That included advantages of 69 yards on the ground and 38 yards through the air. The Blizzard were penalized eight times for 78 yards, and the Barnstormers were flagged seven times for 63 yards.
The Blizzard will host the Quad City Steamwheelers on June 9 with kickoff scheduled for 5:05 p.m. The Barnstormers will visit the Tulsa Oilers on June 10 for a 5:05 p.m. All times listed are pacific daylight time. Click for our complete 2023 IFL Schedule.
