Panthers 69, Gladiators 52
6/3/23 --
SAN JOSE, CA - A pair of fourth quarter Justin Rankin fourth-quarter runs proved to be just the cushion needed for the Bay Area Panthers to put away the visiting Duke City Gladiators tonight at the SAP Center, 59-52.
Rankin finished with 100 yards on the night to go along with four touchdowns on the ground. With the victory, the Panthers retain sole possession of first place in the Western Conference. They are a game ahead of the second place Arizona Rattlers, who pulled out a 63-62 double-overtime win tonight over the Northern Arizona Wranglers. The top two seeds in the IFL's two conferences earn home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
The Gladiators, who fell to 4-6 on the season, have some work to do if they want to reach the playoffs for the third time in their three-season IFL history. They are in a tie for fifth place with the Vegas Knight Hawks, who fell to the visiting Tucson Sugar Skulls earlier in the day, 42-41. That could become a three-way tie with the San Diego Strike Force should San Diego defeat the visiting Tulsa Oilers on June 4. This is the first of two meetings between the teams this season. They meet up again on June 15 at Rio Rancho, New Mexico. The Gladiators lead the overall series 2-1, including a 1-1 mark on the road.
Dalton Sneed completed nine of 11 passes for 103 yards and three touchdowns for the Panthers. He also rushed for 63 yards and two scores. Rankin's performance came while averaging 5.9 yards per carry. Cutrell Haywood hauled in five passes for 62 yards and two touchdowns, while JT Stokes had three catches for 37 yards and a score. Antwon Kincaid tallied 9.5 tackles and an interception for the Bay Area defense, and Darin Hungerford had nine tackles and a sack. Trae Meadows added an interception to the defensive effort.
Charles McCullum finished 16 of 22 for 197 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. He also made his mark on the ground; rushing for 102 yards on 13 rushes. Gary Brown caught five passes for 50 yards and three touchdowns, and Xavier Amey and Troy Evans each accumulated 52 receiving yards. Nazir Streater led the Duke City defense with eight tackles and Jimmy Thomas had a sack.
The Gladiators had 313 yards of total offense to 265 for the Panthers. That included a 95-yard edge in the passing game, while the Panthers held a 47-yard edge on the ground. Duke City was penalized 11 times for 61 yards and Bay Area was flagged five times for 25 yards.
The Gladiators are on the road on June 10 as they visit the Tucson Sugar Skulls for a 6:05 p.m. kickoff. The Panthers will visit the Bay Area Panthers on June 11 with kickoff set for 3:05 p.m. All times listed are pacific daylight time. Click for our complete 2023 IFL Schedule.
