FRISCO, TX - Seven different players found the end zone as the Frisco Fighters claimed home field advantage throughout the playoffs with a dominating 56-15 win over the visiting Sioux Falls Storm tonight at Comercia Center.
Two of the Fighters touchdowns came on defense, via pick sixes. in the second half. Frisco stands at 12-2, the Indoor Football league's best record, and in first place in the Eastern Conference. The Fighters have won four straight and earn their second straight conference title. They still have one game left, the season finale in two weeks, before hosting a playoff game the following week.
Sioux Falls falls into a tie with the Green Bay Blizzard at 7-6, but have the tiebreaker edge. The Blizzard came from behind to defeat the Tulsa Oilers tonight in Northeast Oklahoma. Both teams have two games remaining. Should the Storm match the Blizzard's win totals (or better), they will earn the playoff berth.
Frisco wins the overall series over Sioux Falls. The Fighters hit a field goal as time expired to top the Storm on June 10, 54-51, at Sioux Falls. The Fighters now lead the overall series 5-0 with three of those wins coming at home.
The Fighters scored just over two minutes into the game on Martez Carter's 13-yard touchdown run. The Storm came right back on Lorenzo Brown, Jr.'s one-yard plunge up the middle midway through the opening quarter. Frisco went back up when T..J. Edwards found Charles Headen III 26 yards down the right side. After a long missed field goal from Sioux Falls, Edwards found Phazione McClurge for a 35-yard score. The Fighters led 21-7 at the end of the quarter.
Sioux Falls turned the ball over on downs deep in Frisco territory and the Fighters offense took over. They capitalized on the opportunity with a 10-yard touchdown strike in the back of the end zone to Jordan Jolly. The score gave the Fighters a 28-7 lead with 6:13 remaining in the quarter. The Fighters tacked on a 16-yard touchdown pass across the middle to Headen with 18 seconds remaining. Frisco took a 35-7 advantage into the intermission.
Seth Collins, who replaced Brown at quarterback on the final drive of the first half, tossed toward the end zone on a broken play and was picked off by Kyle Meyers, who returned the ball 48 yards for a touchdown to extend the Fighters lead. After getting the ball back on a Kordell Jackson interception of Collins, Lionell McConnell made the score 49-7 with a six-yard run around the left side with four minutes remaining in the third. Frisco led 49-7 heading into the final quarter.
The Storm ended the scoring drought on Collins' 43-yard bomb to Draysean Hudson. Collins rushed for the two-point conversion. Edwards went deep on Frisco's ensuing drive, but was intercepted by Clifton Duck. Collins threw his third interception of the night and his second to the Fighters' Jackson, who returned it 42 yards to extend the lead to 56-15 with 9:43 remaining. The Fighters turned over the ball on downs with 4:32 left, giving Collins and the Storm another chance to add some points on the board. However, the Storm also turned over the ball on downs and the Fighters essentially ran out the clock.
Edwards completed 10 of 14 passes for 157 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. Headen caught three balls for 48 yards and two scores. Carter added 46 yards off 16 carries to go along with his rushing touchdown. Charles Williams led the Fighters defense with six total tackles and two sacks. Jackson intercepted two balls and Meyers had a pick. B.J. Taufalele added a sack.
Brown finished just two of 11 for 16 yards along with a rushing touchdown. Collins was slightly better, going three of 13 for 54 yards with a touchdown and three picks. Hudson's one reception went for 42 yards and a touchdown. LaRonji Vason-McCoy's six tackles paced the Storm defense. Daryle banfield had a sack and Duck added his interception.
Frisco gained 222 yards to 110 for Sioux Falls. The Fighters had a 87-yard advantage in receiving yards and a seven-yard edge in rushing yards. The Fighters were flagged 11 times for 77 yards and the Storm were penalized eight times for 63 yards.
Sioux Falls will visit the Iowa Barnstormers on July 8 for a 5:05 p.m. kickoff. The Fighters have a bye next week, but close out the regular season on the road against the Barnstormers.
