Fighters 54, Storm 51
6/10/23 --
SIOUX FALLS, SD - Bryce Crawford knocked through a 19-yard field goal as time expired as the Frisco Fighters escaped Sioux Falls with a 54-51 win over the Storm tonight at the Denny Sanford Premier Center.
The Fighters' win keeps them in sole possession of first place in the IFL's Eastern Conference, just a game up on the Massachusetts Pirates, who defeated the visiting Vegas Knight Hawks tonight, 49-28. Frisco moves to 9-2, while Massachusetts is 8-3. Each team has just four games remaining during the regular season. Frisco can clinch a playoff spot outright with a win next week as they visit the Northern Arizona Wranglers.
The Storm fell to 5-5 overall and are just percentage points behind the now fourth-place Green Bay Blizzard. Green Bay turned back the Quad City Steamwheelers last night, 45-38. The Fighters lead the overall series against the Storm, 4-0 with marks of 2-0 at home and away.
Frisco scored first by way of a 10-yard run from quarterback TJ Edwards on its opening drive. Sioux Falls came right back when it's own quarterback, Lorenzo Brown, Jr., plunged up the middle for a one-yard score. The Fighters took no time in answering with Martez Carter's one-yard run up the middle to put Frisco back on top by a touchdown. It took the Storm just one play to respond. Brown found Donnie Corley in the back left corner of the end zone. Nick Gauna nailed a deuce on the ensuing kickoff for the Storm. It was Gauna, and the Storm's, first deuce of the season and gave Sioux Falls a 16-14 lead with three minutes remaining in the opening quarter. Edwards hit Jerminic Smith for a 29-yard touchdown to put the Fighters back in the lead. They held a 21-16 advantage at the end of the first.
Sioux Falls retook the lead when Brown found Corley in the back of the end zone for a nine-yard touchdown. The Fighters added a three-yard touchdown strike from Edwards to Smith with 20 seconds remaining in the first half to give the Fighters a five-point lead. Gauna tried a 40-yard field goal as time expired, but it sailed wide left. Frisco led 28-23 at intermission.
The Storm took the opening kickoff of the second half and scored on a six-yard scramble up the middle from Brown. The Fighters responded with a two-yard run from Edwards. Crawford nailed a deuce to give the Fighters a 37-30 lead with just over eight minutes left in the third. The Storm were driving deep into Fighters territory when Draysean Hudson's fumble was recovered by Naashon Hughes of Frisco, which led 37-30 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Fighters took advantage of the turnover with a 37-yard bomb from Edwards to Jordan Jolly and they were up by a pair of touchdowns. Brown brought the Storm back, firing a 19-yard touchdown to Dwight Blakely, who caught the ball at the dasher board and sprinted down the right sideline for the score. The Fighters came right back when Edwards ran a bootleg untouched around the left side for a 21-yard touchdown. Brown found Hudson along in the back of the end zone for a 23-yard touchdown to pull the Storm to within 51-44 with six minutes remaining. Frisco had an opportunity to increase their lead, but TJ Edwards was intercepted in the end zone by the Storm's Byron Edwards. Brown found Blakely for a nine-yard touchdown. Gauna's point after tied the game at 51-51 with 39 seconds remaining. That gave the Fighters plenty of time to set up Crawford's game winner.
Edwards finished 18 of 27 with three touchdowns and an interception, and rushed for 46 yards and three more scores. Carter added 45 yards to his touchdown on the ground. Jolly led the receiving corps with seven catches for 82 yards and a touchdown, while Smith has five grabs for 74 yards and two scores. Royce See finished with six tackles, while J.D. Griggs added five.
Brown went 10 of 22 for 167 yards with five touchdowns and no picks. He also rushed 15 times for 66 yards and two touchdowns. Corley caught three passes for 61 yards and two touchdowns, and Blakely's two touchdowns came on his two catches on the night. James Brown and Clifton Duck lead the Storm defense with 11 and 10 tackles, respectively. Former Fighter Bryce Edwards had an interception.
Frisco led the battle of total offense, 304 yards to 236. They had a 46-yard edge in receiving yards and 22-yard advantage in rushing yards. The Fighters were penalized 15 times for 111 yards and the Storm were flagged three times for 25 yards. Neither defense recorded a sack.
The Storm will visit the Tulsa Oilers on June 17 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. The Fighters will be on the road to take on the Northern Arizona Wranglers on June 17 for a 6:05 p.m. kickoff. All times listed are pacific daylight time. Click for our complete 2023 IFL Schedule.
