TULSA, OK - Max Meylor's four-yard touchdown pass to Steven Newbold with three seconds turned out to be the winning score as the Green Bay Blizzard kept their playoff hopes alive with a come-from-behind 58-55 win over the Tulsa Oilers tonight at the BOK Center.
The Blizzard improve to 7-6 on the season and into a tie with the Sioux Falls Storm. Each team has two games left with the Storm owning the tiebreaker. If the Blizzard can win one more than the Storm over the next two weeks, they will earn their first playoff bid since 2019. Sioux Falls fell to the Frisco Fighters tonight, 56-15. Otherwise, they will take an early vacation.
Tulsa nearly won its first-ever home game in their expansion season. They are 1-13 with one home game left and have been eliminated from the playoffs. Their 55 points matched their season-high which they scored in a one-point loss to the San Diego Strike Force on June 4. This was Tulsa's first-ever game against the Blizzard.
The Oilers struck first on a 24-yard scamper around the right side from Dalton James. Max Meylor put the Blizzard on the board with a nine-yard touchdown toss to Shaquon Curenton, but Tulsa came right back with a four-yard touchdown from Andre Sale to Jonathan Nance with 6:50 left in the first quarter. After getting the ball back, Tulsa added to its lead on a 17-yard touchdown strike from Sale to Joshua Crockett. The Oilers led 20-6 at the end of one.
Meylor found Terrence Smith for a six-yard touchdown pass to draw to within eight points. early in the second quarter. Sale brought the Oilers back, converting on a 14-yard touchdown to newly signed Ka'Ronce Higgins with just under 11 minutes remaining in the quarter. Meylor rushed for a one-yard touchdown to make score 27-18 midway through the quarter. with the Oilers driving, Sale threw deep, but was intercepted by Ravarius Rivers of the Blizzard who returned it 35-yards for the touchdown. Meylor hit Irvin for a two-point conversion to make it a one-point game. Sale Found Nance for a 19-yard touchdown with a minte left, then called it with a two-point conversion pass to Joshua Crockett.
Sale's 10-yard touchdown run put the Oilers up by eight with 4:27 left in the third quarter. Green Bay tied the game at the end of the quarter on a two-yard rush from Smith, and a two-point conversion toss from Meylor to Irvin. The teams headed into the fourth quarter locked in a 42-42 battle.
A seven-yard rush from James two-and-a-half minutes into the fourth put the Oilers up by a touchdown. It was James' second score on the day. With Green Bay driving, Meylor was intercepted in the end zone by Tulsa linebacker Jordan Jones. The Blizzard later scored on a 42-yard touchdown from Meylor to Mike Green II, and took the lead on Maylor's rush for the two-point conversion. Sale hit Nance for the one-yard score to put the Oilers back on top, 55-50, with just over a minute remaining. The Blizzard wasn't done, as they drove down and scored on a four-yard touchdown from Meylor to Steven Newbold. Meylor hit Green for another two-point conversion.
Meylor went 26 of 35 for 282 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed for 23 yards and a pair of scores. Irvin led all receivers with nine catches for 110 yards. Green caught four passes for 64 yards and a touchdown. Smith had a touchdown on the ground and another through the air. Rivers had seven total tackles and an interception, and Allaah Sessions added five tackles.
Sale finished 19 of 23 for 182 yards with five touchdowns and a pick. He also rushed for 29 yards and a score. James gained 51 yards off six carries to go with his two touchdowns. Nance hauled in six passes for 63 yards and three touchdowns. Dashawn Benton led the Tulsa defense with 10 tackles. Gibson Ziah had 6.5 tackles and a sack. Jones added an interception and Henry Kellogg had a sack.
Green Bay gained 319 yards to 257 for Tulsa, including a 102-yard edge in the passing game. Tulsa had an advantage of 40 yards on the ground. Both teams were penalized five times; The Oilers for 39 yards and the Blizzard for 34 yards.
The Blizzard will Visit the Quad City Steamwheelers on July 8 for a 5:05 p.m. kickoff.
