BREAKDOWN
Tucson made the playoffs last year, but was quickly dismissed by the eventual Bay Area Panthers in the first round. The Sugar Skulls have made the playoffs three of their four seasons in the IFL, but have yet to put together a playoff win. This year, they will look to take the next step with what promises to be a talented group on the roster. Quarterback Ramone Atkins was traded to the Arizona Rattlers for Drew Powell during the off season, but both have bolted for the new Arena Football League (Nashville Kats and Orlando Predators, respectively). The only quarterback listed on the roster we have compiled is Neiko Hollins, though there may have been another signing not reported. Hollins, out of Midwestern State, is a bit similar to the NFL's Jalen Hurts. Receiver should be a strong position this season as the Sugar Skulls signed free agents Mike Carrigan (Quad City) and Jerminic Smith (Frisco), the real threat is at running back where Mike Jones returns for his third season as one of the league's more bullish rushers and as a receiving threat out of the backfield. Linebacker Trae'Varis Ferrell returns to pace a defense which includes defensive back David Haney and Boss Tagaloa, the latter of who was acquired via trade with Vegas.

BREAKDOWN
Northern Arizona definitely had its troubles with Arizona in the opener two weeks ago, but has had a week off to make some adjustments in advance of this matchup against their in-state rival Sugar Skulls. The Wranglers are hoping to avoid their first 0-2 start on the season since 2021 when they take the field at Findlay Toyota Center. Joshua Jones and Dillon Sterling-Cole both got about one half's worth of action, but neither were outstanding in their season debuts, though Jones rushed for a 4.6-yard average and a touchdown. He started against the Rattlers so it wouldn't be surprising to see him get another shot. Sterling-Cole would be waiting in the wings (or, perhaps vice versa). Returning back Jarrod Ware, Jr. carried the ball just five times, but averaged 5.2 yards with a trip to the end zone. He can also can be a receiving option out of the backfield. Arsiah McCorker was the leading receiver at 15 yards per catch and a touchdown, but his most impressive plays were two kickoffs he returned for touchdowns. Defensive back Malik Sonnier and linebacker Shanon Reid proved to be the playmakers for the Wranglers in their first game and that should be expected to continue. Veteran back Travion Banks should also figure into the mix.
