MOLINE, IL - Daniel Smith threw for three touchdowns and rushed for five more as the Tulsa Oilers declared victory in a wild shootout this afternoon at Vibrant Arena at the MARK.
The Oilers 72-59 win marks the signature win of their short history of one-plus seasons. It also is the second straight win over the Steamwheelers, dating back to last season's finale, a 56-35 triumph at home. The 72 points scored is a franchise-high, eclipsing the 56 points from that matchup last July.
With the win, Tulsa moves to 3-2 on the season and 2-1 on the road. The Steamwheelers fall to 2-3 and 1-2 at home. The Oilers now lead the overall series between the teams, 2-1, with a 1-0 record at Moline. The teams face off again this season when they clash on July 13 at Tulsa.
Quad City struck first on a 21-yard field goal from Kyle Kaplan on their opening drive. Tulsa returned the favor when Michael Hall nailed a 42-yard field goal right down the middle to tie the game at 3-3. The Steamwheelers responded with a five-yard run around the left side from Edward Vander. The Oilers came right back with a one-yard plunge from Smith. The teams were deadlocked in a 10-10 tie after a quarter of play.
The tie was broken early in the second quarter with a 15-yard strike from Judd Erickson to a wide open Keyvan Rudd in the middle of the end zone. Smith ran a quarterback draw around the right side for a six-yard touchdown, But the point-after try was blocked by Jaylin Swan of the Steamwheelers. That left Quad City with a 17-16 lead in the middle of the second. A botched handoff from Judd Erickson to Vander resulted in Tulsa's Leon Smalls picking up the ball and returning it 15 yards for the go ahead score. That didn't last long as Vander took a the handoff, broke through the line, and sprinted 45 yards for a Quad City score. Tulsa drove quickly down the field, scoring on Smith's 15-yard strike to Alexis Rosario. Erickson's one-yard touchdown with 13 seconds left in the half put the Steamwheelers up 31-30 at the break.
Smith rushed for another one-yard score which put Tulsa back up by six a minute and a half into the third quarter. Next, it was Erickson's turn to score from a yard out. Kaplan's extra point once again put the Steamwheelers up by a point. The Oilers struck back on a 14-yard touchdown strike from Smith to Rosario midway through the quarter. The Oilers led 44-38 heading into the final quarter.
That's when the fireworks really started. Vander's three-yard run put the Steamwheelers back up by a point, but the Oilers came right back on a one-yard run from Smith. Tulsa stole a possession when Kareem Gaulden intercepted Erickson in the end zone for a touchback. The Oilers capitalized immediately when Smith found Rosario for a 45-yard score and they were up 58-45 with nine minutes remaining. Erickson and Vesey connected on a seven-yard touchdown to pull to within six points with just under six minutes to go. Jonathan Nance's one-yard score once again put the Oilers up by two possessions until Easton Bianchi returned the ensuing kickoff 40 yards for a Steamwheelers touchdown. Smith added a two-yard touchdown with 32 seconds which turned out to seal the deal.
Smith completed 14 of 18 passes for 209 yards, and rushed 10 times for 22 yards, to to along with his eight total touchdowns. Rosario hauled in six of those passes for 123 yards and six scored. Jarrod Ware added four catches for 42 yards to go with 29 rushing yards for the game. Jordan Jones, who led the IFL in tackles last season, recorded nine tackles, while Kaytron Allen added 7.5 takedowns of his own.
Erickson finished 16 of 28 passing for 176 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed for 25 yards and two scores. Vander carried nine times for 70 yards and a trio of touchdowns and Jarrod Harrington had five receptions for 57 yards. Bikembe Kearney recorded eight tackles, including a tackle for loss.
Quad City outgained Tulsa in total offense, 269 yards to 260 with a 42-yard advantage in the running game. The Oilers had a 33-yard edge in the passing game. The Steamwheelers were penalized nine times for 177 yards and the Oilers were flagged seven times for 117 yards. In a stat which is seldom reflective in an indoor football outcome, the Oilers held the ball 8:36 longer than the Steamwheelers.
The Steamwheelers will visit the Iowa Barnstormers on May 4 for a 5:05 p.m. kickoff. The Oilers will host the Jacksonville Sharks on May 4 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
