Panthers 33, Strike Force 32
4/28/24 --
SAN DIEGO, CA - And then there were two.
It wasn't the prettiest of outings, but the Bay Area Panthers were able to edge out the San Diego Strike Force tonight for the second time in eight days. The Panthers' 33-32 win at Pechanga Arena keeps them undefeated this season -- one of only two teams that can make that declaration.
The Panthers stay perfect at 5-0 and tied atop the Western Conference standings with the Vegas Knight Hawks, while San Diego drops to 3-2 and falls into fourth in the conference standings. Bay Area also picks up its first road win at San Diego and is 4-2 all-time against the Strike Force. The Panthers and Knight Hawks are the last two undefeated teams through week 7 after the Frisco Fighters 54-52 loss at home to the San Antonio Gunslingers on April 26.
Bay Area scored in the final minute last week in a 53-50 home victory over San Diego. This was only the second of four meetings between the teams. In addition to last week's Panthers' win, the teams line up against one another on June 16 at San Jose and on July 20 back at San Diego.
San Diego took the opening kickoff down to the Bay Area seven-yard line, but turned it over downs after utilizing 8:21 of the clock. The Panthers scored on their second play from scrimmage when Daquan Neal found an open Jazeric Peterson for a 28-yard touchdown. The Strike Force answered immediately when Elijah Lilly returned the following kickoff 44 yards down the left sideline for the score. Stevie Artigue's point-after try was nullified after a holding call. The ball was moved 10 yards back and the kick sailed wide left. The Panthers led 7-6by the end of the first quarter.
Scott Enos' 42-yard field goal extended the Panthers' lead to four a minute and a half into the second quarter. Enos, a kicking coach in the Bay Area, had just been signed earlier this week as a replacement for Craig Peterson. Artigue's missed 27-yard field goal gave the Panthers the ball back at their own five. The Panthers went up 16-6 on Neal's 18-yard lob to JT Stokes in the end zone at the 4:14 mark of the second. It could have been 17 had the point-after try not been blocked by San Diego's Byron Cooper. The Strike Force looked to answer, but a Nate Davis throw across the middle was intercepted by B.J. Taufalele who returned it 20 yards for the touchdown. The Panthers attempted a surprise onside kick and was successful when it was recovered by Desmond Williams. They were forced into a 61-yard field goal try from Enos, which was short and returned it 42 yards to the Panthers' seven. Williams cause Strike Force running back Chance Bell to fumble and recovered the loose ball to give the Panthers the ball with 27 seconds remaining. They drove to the San Diego 20 where Enos nailed a 28-yard field goal. Davis' lob to the end zone was intercepted by Tyler Watson as time expired. Bay Area led 26-6 at intermission.
Bay Area received the kickoff to start the second half. They increased their lead to 33-6 when Neal rushed around the left side. The Strike Force finally scored an offensive touchdown when Davis hit Arthur Jackson III for a 14-yard score with four minutes left in the third quarter. The Strike Force defense forced the Panthers into a 58-yard field goal try, but Enos' kick went out of bounds at the sideline. The Panthers led 33-12 at the end of the third with the Strike Force driving at the Bay Area four-yard line.
The Strike Force scored early in the third quarter when Davis found Marques "Hoodie" Rodgers in the back of the end zone. Rodgers, making his season debut, led the IFL with 2,229 all-purpose yards as a member of the Strike Force in 2019. Davis found Jackson across the middle for the two-point conversion and the Panthers' lead was just 13. The Panthers turned the ball over on downs at the San Diego 13. with 10:32 to go. The Strike Force responded with Davis' 37-yard touchdown to Lilly in the right side of the end zone. Davis' pass for the two-point conversion flew over the head of Rodgers. Enos attempted a 16-yard field goal which would have give the Panthers a 10-point lead, but the kick went wide to the right. Davis threw a strike to Jackson in the end zone in a contested catch with 46 seconds left. The 11-yard score made it a one-point game. Strike Force head coach Taylor Genuser opted to go for the two-point conversion, but Davis' pass to Lilly fell to the ground. The kickoff pinned the Panthers at their own five. Bay Area was able to run out the clock despite San Diego using their last two time outs in the short drive.
The final minute was marred by a confrontation in the stands in what appeared to be guests and/or family members of the games. It resulted in a handful of players of both teams heading into the stands in what appeared to be an effort to break up what was happening. Those players were ejected from the game per IFL rules. For the Panthers it was Joe Foucha, Morris Joseph, Jr. and Su Kamara, and for the Strike Force it was Jackson and Rodgers. Several fans involved were ejected from the arena.
It was a take of two halves as the Strike Force did not score offensively in the first half, while the Panthers went scoreless for the final 28 minutes of the game. The Strike Force scored 26 unanswered to end the game before falling short.
Two of Davis' four touchdown throws went to Jackson. Rodgers and Lilly also caught touchdowns for the Strike Force. Neal threw two touchdown passes and rushed for another for the Panthers. Peterson and Stokes were the recipients of Neal's scoring tosses.
The Panthers will host the Vegas Knight Hawks on May 4 with kickoff set for 6:05 p.m. The Strike Force will host the Northern Arizona Wranglers on May 5 for a 3:05 p.m. kickoff. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
Both games, as well as all IFL games this season, will be streamed live on the IFL YouTube Channel and Caffeine TV IFL. SCtoC will present previews of those, and all, games this season. Those previews will be posted on the board of the home team in each game. Click for our complete IFL 2024 Schedule.
