DES MOINES, IA - Iowa is not kind to the Massachusetts Pirates.
The Barnstormers rallied from a two-score first half deficit to claim a 42-34 win over the Pirates tonight at Wells Fargo Arena. It's the second win of the season for the Barnstormers and the third-straight season in which they have defeated the Pirates at Des Moines.
The win elevates the Barnstormers to 2-5 on the season with a 2-4 mark in Eastern Conference play. They are in sixth place in the standings, just a game back of the Tulsa oilers and Quad City Steamwheelers who share a tie for fourth.
The Pirates fall to 5-2 and into a tie with the Green Bay Blizzard for second in the conference. They are also 5-2 in conference play. The Pirates lead the overall series 4-3 and are winless in Iowa in three tries. Massachusetts defeated Iowa in the first of the two meetings between the teams this season, 54-29, at Lowell, Massachusetts.
Jimmie Robinson's two-yard touchdown run put the Pirates on the board just over five minutes into the game. After getting the ball back with just under five minutes remaining in the opening quarter, Alejandro Bennifield found Teo Redding for a 45-yard touchdown bomb. The Pirates led 14-0 at the end of one.
Iowa got on the board courtesy of a 40-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter. The Pirates struck right back on a two-yard scoring run with 10 minutes remaining. The teams traded missed long field goals before Iowa got the ball back. The Barnstormers scored their first touchdown when Robert Washington ran around the left side from two yards out with 57 seconds to go. They followed that up with a deuce on the ensuing kickoff from Rui. The Pirates added to their lead with an eight-yard scramble from Bennifield with nine seconds remaining. The Barnstormers scored as time expired on a nine-yard touchdown toss to the left side of the end zone from Kyle King to Keshaun Taylor. Massachusetts led 28-19 at intermission.
The Barnstormers pulled to within a two points on a two-yard run from King three minutes into the third quarter. That would prove to be the only score of the third, giving the Pirates a 28-26 lead at the end of three.
Iowa took its first lead of the game when Washington found the end zone on a five-point run. Eight minutes later, King hit Taylor for a 13-yard touchdown, but the Pirates came back with a 14-yard score from Alejandro Bennifield to Thomas Owens with 2:40 left. The Barnstormers were able to run out the clock to preserve the win.
King completed 16 of 28 passes for 97 yards with a pair of touchdowns through the air and one on the ground. Washington rushed 12 times for 82 yards and two scores.Taylor led the Barnstormers with seven catches for 63 yards to go with his two touchdown grabs. Ian McBurrough was a force with 12 tackles and a sack for the Iowa defense.
Bennifield finished 18 of 28 for 207 yards with two touchdowns and no picks. He also rushed for a pair of scores. Robinson rushed nine times for 25 yards and a score, and added six catches for 34 yards. Redding hauled in four passes for 83 yards and a touchdown. Matt Elam had nine tackles and Guy Thomas added a sack for the defense.
Massachusetts gained 241 yards to 162 for Iowa. The Pirates had a 133-yard advantage in receiving yards, while the Barnstormers had a 54-yard edge in rushing. The Pirates were penalized 11 times for 160 yards and the Barnstormers were flagged six times for 78 yards.
The Barnstormers will visit the Quad City Steamwheelers on May 17 for a 5:05 p.m. kickoff. The Pirates will host the Northern Arizona Wranglers on May 18 with kickoff set for 11:05 a.m. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
