Blizzard 64, Steamwheelers 36
5/25/24 --
GREEN BAY, WI - The Green Bay Blizzard took advantage of three turnovers and EJ Burgess rushed for three touchdowns within the last eight minutes as they moved into sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference standings.
There is a catch to "sole possession," however. The Blizzard are a half game above the Frisco Fighters for tonight, but whether it stays that way beyond this week will depend on whether the Fighters can come back from their trip to the Massachusetts Pirates with a win. In that event, the teams are locked in the tie once again. Should they fall to the Pirates, then The Blizzard will be first at 8-2 and the Fighters and Pirates would find themselves tied for third.
The Blizzard's 64-36 win tonight over the Steamwheelers keeps the Blizzard in the driver's seat. Green Bay has defeated it's last four opponents by an average margin of nearly 23 points. As for the Steamwheelers they fall to 4-5, but will remain in fourth place in the conference. This was the second of three matchups against these teams and the only one at Green Bay. The Blizzard took the first game with the low result of 32-24 on April 6. They face off again in just over three weeks on June 22 at Moline, Illinois. Green Bay leads the overall series 6-4 with marks of 4-2 at home and 2-3 on the road.
After the Steamwheelers' Kyle Kaplan went wide right on a 29-yard field goal try on Quad City's first possession, the Blizzard scored on a one-yard plunge up the middle. Green Bay's Ravarius Rivers intercepted Mike Irwin and returned the ball to the 15-yard line to give the Blizzard excellent field position. They capped the drive with a three-yard touchdown run from Meylor. The Steamwheelers got on the scoreboard on the last play of the quarter courtesy a five-yard scoring from from Edward Vander. Green Bay led 14-7 at the end of one.
After the Blizzard turned the ball over on downs, the Steamwheelers had a chance to tie, but quarterback Mike Irwin fumbled and was recovered by Green Bay's Shawn Steele II at the five-yard line. Meylor found Jaylin Cagle for a 14-yard touchdown to extend the lead. Kaplan missed a 45-yard field goal for the Steamwheelers. The Blizzard went up by three touchdowns when Meylor hit Harry Ballard III for a 12-yard score. Quad City had 23 seconds, but were unable to score before time expired. Green Bay led 28-7.
Burgess scored his first touchdown on the night, of eight yards, two minutes into the second half. On Quad City's ensuing drive, Irwin scored from three-yards out to narrow the deficit to three touchdowns. It didn't last long, however. Maylor found Demetrius Moore, who fought off a would-be tackler resulting in a 33-yard touchdown. Irwin countered for the Steamwheelers, hitting Jarrod Harrington in the right side for a nine-yard score. The Blizzard went into the final quarter with a 42-21 lead.
Meylor was intercepted by Quad City's Darreon Jackson and the resulting Steamwheelers' drive ended with a one-yard run from Jordan Vesey. Ravarius Rivers'37-yard kickoff return gave Green Bay the ball at the Quad City 12. The Blizzard scored on a one-yard rush up the middle from Burgess. After Irwin was intercepted by Julian Wilkerson, Burgess scored for the Blizzard on a one-yard run midway through the quarter. Judd Erickson replaced Irwin on the Steamwheelers' next drive. He led Quad City to the two-yard line where Edward Vander ran it in for a touchdown. Erickson hit Harrington for a two-point conversion with 2:20 remaining. Burgess struck again with a 14-run to pay dirt and Andrew Mevis connected on a dropkick (two-) point conversion.
Meylor completed 17 of 24 passes for 236 yards with three touchdowns and a pick, and added two more scores on the ground. Burgess had four touchdowns in total on just six carries for 39 yards. Moore caught five passes for 84 yards and a touchdown. Patron and Ballard each caught four passes, for 59 and 49 yards, respectively. Wilkerson led the defense with eight tackles and an interception.
Irwin finished 11 of 21 for 124 yards with a touchdown and a pick, and rushed for 26 yards and a score. Vander scored two touchdowns of his own on the ground, and had 35 receiving yards. Six different Steamwheelers caught passes in this one, led by Harrington's 43 yards off four receptions and a score. Jordan Vesey hauled in a pair of throws for 40 yards. Jackson had six tackles and an interception to pace the defense.
Green Bay led had a 53-yard advantage in total offense with 60 yards coming in the passing game, while Quad City held a seven-yard edge in the running game. Each team was penalized six times; the Blizzard for 41 yards and the Steamwheelers for 34 yards.
The Steamwheelers will host the Frisco Fighters on June 8 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. The Blizzard will visit the Massachusetts Pirates on June 9 for a 10:05 a.m. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
Both games, as well as all IFL games this season, will be streamed live on the IFL YouTube Channel and Caffeine TV IFL. SCtoC will present previews of those, and all, games this season. Those previews will be posted on the board of the home team in each game. Click for our complete IFL 2024 Schedule.
