Wranglers 74, Wranglers 68
6/23/24 --
PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ - If you love the high scoring action of Indoor Football, this was the game for you.
Josh Jones scored eight total touchdowns; including the game winner with 37.2 seconds remaining as the Northern Arizona Wranglers defeated the San Antonio Gunslingers 74-68 on Sunday afternoon at the Findlay Toyota Center. The 142 combined points was the most scored in an IFL game this weekend, eclipsing the 132 scored in the Vegas Knight Hawks' 68-64 win over the San Diego Strike Force on April 28.
The Wranglers now lead the series between the teams, 2-0. They won the first game between the teams, 57-50, at San Antonio on April 6.
There was plenty of offense in the first quarter as both teams scored on each of their possessions; which resulted in San Antonio taking a 16-14 lead going into the second quarter. The Gunslingers got a stop to start the second quarter and turned it into a touchdown as Sam Castronova scored on a quarterback keeper to put San Antonio up 22-14, but Northern Arizona answered with Josh Jones scoring on a quarterback keeper of his own. The teams traded touchdown passes on the next two possessions with Castronova finding D.J. Myers and Jones finding John Maldonado; which led to the game being tied at 28-28 after Axel Perez converted on the drop kick attempt.
Keyshawn Harper stepped up with four rushing touchdowns, and his third gave San Antonio a 37-28 lead after T.C. Stevens converted on the deuce attempt. There was plenty of time for Jones to respond, and he did just that as he found Maldonado in the end zone as the Wranglers (8-4) cut the deficit to 37-36 at the break. The offensive display continued in the second half as Sam Castronova scored on a quarterback keeper on the first possession of the second half to put the Gunslingers (6-6) up 44-36, but Jones answered with a touchdown pass to Kobay White that tied the game at 44-44 after a Perez drop kick. San Antonio responded as Harper scored another rushing touchdown to give the Gunslingers the lead, and a T.C. Stevens deuce put San Antonio up 53-44 going into the fourth quarter.
Jones found Maldonado in the end zone to cut the deficit to 53-52 after a Perez drop kick, then Shamar Moreland intercepted Sam Castronova and returned it to the end zone to give Northern Arizona a 60-53 lead. The Gunslingers came back with a Castronova quarterback keeper to tie the game at 60-60, but Jones answered by finding Maldonado in the end zone to give the Wranglers a 68-60 lead after a Perez drop kick.
San Antonio responded as Castronova found Kali Rashaad deep, and he took it into the end zone to cut the deficit to two points. Castronova scored on the two point conversion by taking into the end zone and the Gunslingers had tied the game at 68-68 with one minute left. That was more than enough time for Jones as he scored on a quarterback keeper to put the Wranglers up 74-68 with 37.2 seconds left, but Perez missed on the drop kick attempt; giving San Antonio a chance to win the game.
Sam Castronova picked up a couple yards on first down with a quarterback keeper, but then threw two incomplete passes in the end zone. On Fourth and Three, Castronova's pass to the end zone intended for NyQwan Murray was incomplete and Northern Arizona secured the win.
The Gunslingers playoff hopes are in doubt as they fell two games behind the Wranglers for the number three seed in the Western Conference. They have also lost the tiebreaker with the San Diego Strike Force who are also ahead of San Antonio in the Western Conference standings. There is, however, still time for the Gunslingers to make the playoffs, but now they need some help from around the league over the final four weeks of the season if they are going to get there.
Jones finished 19 of 25 for 222 yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed for 98 yards and a pair of scores. Maldonado had a monster game with eight catches for 112 yards and four touchdowns. Malik Sonnier led the Wranglers' defense with 5.5 tackles.
Castronova completed 14 of his 25 throws for 183 yards with a pair of touchdowns and a trio of scores on the ground. The interception was just his fourth of the season. Harper found the end zone four times on nine carries for 98 yards. Kali Rashaad led Gunslingers with four catches for 67 yards and a touchdown. Clifton Duck was a menace on the defensive side of the ball with 12.5 tackles.
The Gunslingers will host the Frisco Fighters on June 29 with kickoff set for 4:05 p.m. The Wranglers will host the San Diego Strike Force on June 29 for a 6:05 p.m. kickoff. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
Both games, as well as all IFL games this season, will be streamed live on the IFL YouTube Channel and Caffeine TV IFL. SCtoC will present previews of those, and all, games this season. Those previews will be posted on the board of the home team in each game. Click for our complete IFL 2024 Schedule.
