BREAKDOWN
San Antonio seems to be relishing the move to the IFL and is gunning for a championship this year. Should they be successful in that endeavor, they would be the second team in this decade to win the title after moving over from the National Arena league the prior off season (the Massachusetts Pirates did it in 2021). Quarterback Sam Castronova engineered the Jacksonville Sharks to the NAL championship a year ago, and the Albany Empire to the AFL championship prior to that. The Gunslingers signed him as a free agent during the offense. Castronova certainly has the championship pedigree around which to build an offense. There are several playmakers on the roster, including wide receivers Fabian Guerra and DJ Myers who have IFL experience. Another player who stands out is LaColby Tucker, an offensive lineman who stands at 6'8” “without shoes” and 325 lbs. According to head coach Tom Menas, he has a high NFL potential. Linebacker Zach Brown is the defensive captain. A couple names which may seem familiar to IFL fans are defensive back/linebacker Jeff Ejekam and linebacker Ricky Wyatt. Also on the roster is defensive lineman Jeremiah Caine, who began last season with the San Diego Strike Force before being traded to the Duke City Gladiators.

BREAKDOWN
It was an ugly dogfight for San Diego last week at Duke City, but the Strike Force scored the winning touchdown on a Travon Van run with 13 seconds left to garner their first win of the season. A win is a win, however, and the Strike Force will look to continue and build momentum as they face the Gunslingers in their 2024 home opener. Nate Davis is one of the best pure passers in the IFL. While he had a bit of an off night, that is typically the exception rather than the rule when it comes to the quarterback. He completed 52 percent of his throws for 173 yards with a touchdown and a pick. Eight of those passes and the touchdown wend to Randal Grimes, clearly his go-to receiver in the game. Van carried the ball nine times for just a 2.7-yard average, but found the end zone a trio of times to help power the Strike Force to its win. Expect a heavy dose of the second-year running back in this game. The defense was truly a team effort in holding the Gladiators to 26 points, and former Northern Arizona Wrangler KiShawn Walker was a big part of that with a pair of touchdowns to go with 4.5 tackles. Justic'e King also had a pick in the game. The veteran duo are players to watch on defense, along with linemen Ja'Quan Artis and Armonti Carey.
