ANALYSIS
This is a tale of two teams going in opposite directions. The Storm are coming of a solid win over the previously unbeaten Iowa Barnstormers, and the Blizzard have dropped the first four games of the season. The series has been seriously one-sided, as the Storm have won all 17 meetings; 15 in the regular season and twice in the playoffs. Over the previous nine seasons, the teams have met no fewer than twice per season since 2011. In three seasons, the teams met three times. The largest margin of victory for the Storm has been by 44 points, a 86-42 win in 2015 and a 75-31 win in 2015.The Blizzard have been more competitive the past couple of years, providing the narrowest margin of seven points; a 66-59 loss in 2016 and a 56-49 loss in 2017.
After hiccup in the season opener against the Arizona Rattlers in which they lost by just six points, The Storm have been impressive in their past two games, a 70-33 drubbing of the Cedar Rapids Titans in week 3, and an impressive 52-40 victory over the Iowa Barnstormers in week 4. The Storm are looking to get back to their championship form after having fallen to the Rattlers in last year's United Bowl. They had won the previous six United Bowls. Sioux Falls leads the team in scoring per game at 51.7 points, and also in total offense at 233.0 yards per game. In his 16th season at the helm of the Storm, head coach Kurtiss Riggs has an overall record of 112-21, including 18-2 in the post season. Like the Blizzard, the Storm have a bye in week 6.
Quarterback Lorenzo Brown is arguably the best in the IFL business. The veteran out of the University of Sioux Falls feels right at home under center with the Storm. It helps that he's had just one head coach in Riggs. Brown ranks first among IFL starting quarterbacks in completion percentage at 70 percent. Ironically, the only higher percentage is his backup, Dillon Turner who has gone 2 of 2. Brown is also second in the IFL in passing yards per attempt at 11.5 yards (behind only the Rattlers' Jeff Ziemba at 11.6). Lyle McCombs' 24 rushing yards per game take significant pressure off of Brown, and leads the team in rushing touchdowns with 5. Judd Harrold and Mike Tatum have been exemplary receivers, averaging 60 and 55 yards receiving per game, respectively, and combining for 8 touchdown passes. Brandynn Clark came on strong in the win over the Barnstormers, catching all 6 of his passes for 58 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Defensive back Trey Wafford's 21 total tackles and 3 pass break ups lead the Storm's defensive attack. He also is credited for a safety. Jabari Gorman, Daniel Lindsey and Jermain Robinson have each intercepted opposing quarterbacks. Miles Bergner has nailed 3 of 5 of his field goal tries with a long of 45 yards. His only two misses have come in the 30-39 range.
The Blizzard are hoping to resurrect their season in the friendly confines of the Resch Center, located less than a block away from historic Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers of the NFL. They had a number of opportunities to overtake the Arizona Rattlers in the fourth quarter of their 37-31 loss in week 4. They were unable to convert on several key plays, hampering themselves with penalties in the fourth quarter. Still, they were competitive, especially on defense and took the defending IFL champions to their limit. Green Bay is one of two teams who average more rushing yards than passing yards per game, and by more than a two-to-one ratio. Former Packers linebacker Josh Francis signed on to the Blizzard roster prior to the season's start. Head coach Chris Williams is 33-73 overall as an IFL head coach.
The biggest positive for the Blizzard has been the return of defensive back and kick returner B.J. Hill. The IFL Hall of Famer has spent his entire IFL career with the Blizzard. He leads the IFL this season in all-purpose yards at 98.5 yards per game, and leads the IFL in kick return average at 22.9 and is one of four IFL players to return a kick for a touchdown this season. Hill also has 17 total tackles and 2 pass break ups this season. Christian Lemay is the quarterback of the Titans and while a talented rusher, he is getting better by the week in the passing game. He completes 39.6 percent of his passes for 4 touchdowns, but also has thrown 4 interceptions. Lemay averages 34.0 rushing yards per game and has 5 touchdowns on the ground. Jasen Oden, Jr. leads the team in rushing at 39.9 yards per game. Chris Malott has been the clear beneficiary of Lemay's progress as a passer. Malott has 12 of the 21 Green bay receptions over the course of the season, and is averaging nearly 39 yards receiving per game. Francis leads the team in total tackles, tackles for loss and sacks. Against the Rattlers, defensive lineman Sean Daniels recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown. Jordan Entries is 4 of 7 on field goal attempts with a long of 34 yards. Two of those missed attempts were from over 40 yards.
