ANALYSIS
This is a tale of two separate fortunes over the past couple of seasons. One team had its best season in the IFL in 2017 and the other struggled through its worst. Each team is headed in similar directions this year. The Blizzard are the only winless team in the IFL, standing at 0-6. The Barnstormers come in at 4-2 after having won two of their last three games. Iowa leads the series, 8-2, including a 4-0 sweep in 2017. The Barnstormers also won the first game between the teams this season, 41-20, occurring in opening week. The Largest margin of victory between the teams was 52 points, a 64-12 win by the Barnstormers on May 26, 2017. The Blizzard's have come by a single point in each game, including a 47-46 win in the first-ever meeting on March 22, 2015. Green Bay is in its ninth season in the IFL, and Iowa is in its fourth. Each team featured rookies making their first career start at quarterback in their teams' most recent respective games.
After going 0-5 in to begin the season, the Blizzard are starting from scratch. Chris Williams was released as head coach and Corey Roberson was tabbed as interim head coach. Also released were starting quarterbacks Christian Lemay and Paris Cotton. The team brought in Southwestern University alum Bryan Hicks to take over under center. It's impossible to judge results from a single game, especially an away contest against the defending champions in which the Blizzard fell by 32 points. Roberson and Hicks will work to make the offense more competitive this time around against the Barnstormers. Green Bay had byes in weeks 6 and 7, and its week 9 game at home against the Cedar Rapids was postponed indefinitely due to blizzard-like conditions in the northern midwest (pun intended).
Hicks started his Blizzard career adequately, completing 11 of 16 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for a touchdown. While an indoor football team needs its quarterback to throw more touchdown passes, it was a strong completion percentage and nice yardage. Roberson has a building block on which to work with Hicks. Serge Trezy has emerged as the go to rusher. He had 11 carries for 67 yards and a touchdown in last week's loss to the Rattlers. While Chris Malott leads the Rattlers in all receiving categories, Andre McDonald caught the first four passes of his season, for 73 yards. With Malott and McDonald, Hicks could benefit from having two reliable target which could, at least at some point, help lead the Blizzard to their first win of the season. B.J. Hill, already an IFL Hall of Famer, has been spectacular in the kick return game. He is averaging 21.6 yards per return and has 669 return yards on the season. With last week's 234 return yards. Hill topped the 4,000 career return yard mark last week. That's far and away the career IFL leader. He returned two kicks for touchdowns last week and has three on the season. Brian Boudreaux has 5.5 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery. Josh Jenkins leads the team total tackles with 30.5. Jordan Endries has made 4 of his 9 field goal attempts this season. All five misses have come from 33 or more yards.
The Barnstormers sit in third place in the IFL standings, but have a chance to start looking at home field advantage in the playoffs. If the playoffs were to begin today, the Barnstormers would face the Sioux Falls Storm; a team with which they have had trouble beating since they came into the league three-and-a-half years ago. Like the Blizzard, the Barnstormers feature a new quarterback in Grant Rohach, who has taken the reigns of the team since Drew Powell has moved on to the Canadian Football League. Rohach, who attended nearby Iowa St. University, earned his first win of the season two weeks ago in the team's 41-25 win over the Nebraska Danger. This could serve as a tune up game as Iowa will visit the Storm on May 5. The Barnstormers lead the IFL in yards allowed at 206.7.
Rohach is among the somewhat rare football quarterback who claims a win in his first start. He took his first snap under center against the Danger in week 8. He completed 11 of 21 passes for 138 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also rushed 9 times for 42 yards and a touchdown. He seems poised to take control of the team for the duration of the season. Donavan Williams leads Barnstormers in rushing among rushers with 32.2 yards per game. That said, it was Jamal Tyler who got the call two weeks ago against the Danger. Tyler had 47 yards on 11 rushes which helped take the heat off Rohach in his first start. Ryan Balentine ranks fifth in IFL history in all-purpose yards with 5,653. Balentine has 250 receiving yards on 23 catches with 6 touchdowns. Brady Roland averages 60.2 receiving yards per game and leads the team with 7 touchdowns. Jonathan Duarte rounds out the group with 16 catches for 130 yards and 4 touchdowns. Zachary Allen has 3 tackles for loss to go along with his team-leading 33.5 touchdowns. The wild card is Bryce Enyard, who had a league-leading 5 interceptions and is second on the team with 29.5 total tackles. Rocky Hayes has two fumble recoveries, and B.J. Butler has 6 tackles for loss. Cody Barber has made 9 of 15 field goal attempts with a long of 33 yards. Four of those misses have come from 37 yards or farther.
