ANALYSIS
The Rattlers have already clinched a playoff spot. They are 8-1 with five games left and 6.5 games ahead of the Green Bay Blizzard and seven games ahead of the Cedar Rapids Titans. The Rattlers won both of last season's meetings against the Blizzard. The first was a 30-29 victory in Green Bay, and a 64-29 win in the second match up in Phoenix. The Rattlers won the first meeting between the teams this season, but the Blizzard gave them everything they could handle before falling by six points in the fourth quarter. Green Bay had a chance to tie and even pull ahead, but then-quarterback Christian Lemay's pass to the end fell short, giving the Rattlers the lead. The second game this season ended in a 65-33 Rattlers win. The Blizzard are in their ninth season in the IFL and the Rattlers are in their second season in the league. These teams are the only two IFL teams which also feature National Football League teams in their respective cities (Arizona Cardinals and Green Bay Packers).
The Blizzard have to be feeling good after wining their first game of the season, 47-25, over the Nebraska Danger last week. It was the highest point total this season for the team. The Blizzard also allowed their fewest points in any game this season with 25. Bryan Hicks is clearly getting more and more comfortable as the Blizzard quarterback. He threw for six touchdowns in the win, along with 201 yards. Both are season highs for any Green Bay quarterback on the season. Hicks completed over 84 percent of his passes in the win. It was Roberson's first win in three tries since taking over at the helm of the team. The veteran Blizzard player and assistant coach is 2-1 as a head coach in the IFL.
Nearly immediately after Roberson took over for the dismissed Chris Williams, he brought in Hicks. The results have thus far been impressive. In just three games, Hicks is averaging 168.7 passing yards per game, which ranks second in the IFL. He is largely responsible for turning the Blizzard's offensive attack from a primarily running attack, to a formidable passing game. They still have the ability to rush the ball, but Hicks has turned heads as a legitimate passing threat. Perhaps the most notable news is that defensive back and kick returner B.J. Hill was converted to a running back last week against the Danger. Hill, an IFL Hall of Famer who came out of retirement to re-joining the Storm this season, gained 90 yards on 12 carries and gave the Blizzard a dual threat offense. Chris Malott has led the Green Bay receiving group since week 1. He is averaging 12.4 yards per catch and 32.6 receiving yards per game. Jereme Jones comes has 13.4 and 26.9 numbers, respectively. Kezlow Smith caught 6 passes for 98 yards and a pair of touchdowns last week against the Danger. Josh Jenkins had 5 tackles for loss and a pass break up to go along with his team-leading 43 total tackles. Brandon Boudreaux leads the team with 8 tackles for loss and Robert Metz is tied for second in the IFL with 4 sacks. Jeff Budzien is back as the kicker for GReen Bay, and has hit 3 of 8 field goal attempts with a long of 43 yards. All five of his misses have come from 36 yards or further.
The Rattlers remain the IFL's hottest team. After coming back to survive a scare to the Cedar Rapids Titans two weeks ago in Phoenix, the Rattlers pulled away from the Titans last week in Cedar Rapids by 15 points last week. In the former game, running back Darrell Monroe set an IFL record with 11 rushing touchdowns. Had Monroe not scored his last touchdown with two seconds left, the Rattlers would have suffered their second loss in the game and would be tied in the IFL standings. They technically would be second given the Iowa Barnstormers holding a current tiebreaker. Arizona is riding a seven-game winning streak and looks for a win to fend off the Barnstormers from taking over the top spot in the standings with a win. Kevin Guy is 20-5 in the IFL as the Rattlers' head coach.
Monroe is setting himself up for a potential Offensive Player of the Year award. He is averaging 118.8 rushing yards in his past four games, with three 100-yard performances during that span. Monroe needs to average just a shade over 80 yards per game in order to reach the 1,000-yard plateau. With the way he has been rushing, that is attainable. Aided by his record-setting 11 rushing touchdowns in week 10, he has a league-leading 24 scores on the ground this season. Jeff Ziemba has quietly become one of the better quarterbacks in the IFL. He is completing 59.3 percent of his passes and is third in passing yards with 1,013, and second in passing touchdowns with 24. Jamal Miles, who see's spot duty in the running game, leads the team in receptions and receiving yards. Veteran Anthony Amos is adept at finding the end zone and his 12 receiving touchdowns are second in the league. Nathan Lindsey and Arkeith Brown are a tough match up for any opposing receiver. They come in each with 38.5 total tackles, and Brown has 3 interceptions. Joshua Gordon leads the pass rush with 9 tackles for loss and a team-leading 3 sacks, and and Ryan Langford leads the team with 3.5 sacks. Chris McAllister comes in with 7.5 tackles for loss. Sawyer Petre is strong with his kicoffs, but has hit just 40 percent of his field goal attempts. He has a long of 41 yards and Five of his nine misses have come from 44 yards or beyond.
